Steam Railway SR507 - on sale now!

Discussion in 'Steam Railway' started by Thomas Bright, Jun 26, 2020.

Returning to steam is the theme of this edition of Steam Railway, as Britain’s preserved railways prepare to reopen following their coronavirus-imposed hiatus, while a number of beloved engines return to traffic after years – sometimes decades – on the side lines.

One such engine is our cover star, No. 6024 King Edward I, which is on the verge of returning to the main line following perhaps its most extensive overhaul yet. Down Main correspondent Tony Streeter goes behind the scenes of the ‘King’s’ overhaul and finds out what the future holds for Collett’s four-cylinder masterpiece.

Another engine set to return is Ffestiniog Railway ‘Large England’ No. 5 Welsh Pony. The 1867-built 0-4-0STT is set to make its preservation debut on June 27 and, as an exclusive preview, Steam Railway has the first pictures of this fascinating locomotive in its all-but complete guise ahead of its first steaming. That’s not all, as Thomas Bright and editor Nick Brodrick explore the history of this extraordinary restoration project.

One other potential returnee is unique standard gauge Beyer Garratt William Francis. In the latest instalment of our National Treasures series, Thomas Bright details the history of this unusual engine. Elsewhere, we take a closer look at the Great Central Railway’s landmark ‘Bridging the Gap’ project, Tim Dunn showcases the architectural wonders of Swindon’s Railway Village, and ex-North Eastern Region and Aln Valley Railway engineman Ken Middlemist recalls his footplate exploits.
