Broken stays can be caused by boiler mis-management, inadequate spacing, wrong use of materials, even bad track! I think a lot of people are perhaps jumping the gun, this is not necessarilly a case of 'old boiler disease'. By the way, I don't mean to imply anything about the 850 group with the above post. Although I have been hearing things from usually credible sources, until there is an official decision to go public, it's best not to speculate really.

Doe this parallel the problems with 60009's springs which owner, John Cameron, is reported to blame on the poor state of the track over the S&C ?

6201, 48151and 46223 have done the S&C quite often and I've not heard of them having problems.

To be honest, you'd need to have pretty rough track before any stays started failing on you, but it can happen. Not having travelled on the S&C, I couldn't really comment, but there are some rough places on the network. I gave it as an example, but it's not very likely in this case.

I'm delighted to announce that "The Hero's Return", Steam Age Pictures' DVD of Lord Nelson at work, is now ready. It starts with 850's departure from Eastleigh on 16th Aug 2006 and ends with her last railtour (for the time being), to Weymouth, on 15th Aug 2007. Also included are sequences of her on the West Somerset Railway, East Lancs Railway, Didcot, her test run in the North West and 7 other mainline tours. My thanks are due to TWR Video and Linesider for their excellent camera work. A description of the disc and some example stills can be found at http://www.steamage.co.uk/LPR003_850/index.html (will be updated this evening with final details). The disc costs £10, including p&p, and all proceeds will be donated to ERPS.

60009 had a broken spring for months before it was changed, not a case of bad track!

Its the only way you will see her run again by the way the NRM are going about getting her back out on to main line again. #-o #-o

Now, now! Don't be so impatient, nor so pessimistic. Think how long it took to return 777 or 71000 after their recent firebox problems. I guess we should expect 1 - 2 years before Nellie is up and about again, but that's not the end of the world, especially if the boiler is recertified in the process (note - that's not certain to happen). I'd much rather it was done well than quickly. In the mean time, buy my DVD and put a little something into ERPS's coffers. It all helps...

If I buy the Lord Nelson DVD to put "money into the ERPS funds" will that money be spent on sorting out your own engine 828 or be poured into a national collection loco that has to be returned after ten years?
It seems a shame for all the attention to be on 850 when you own an engine.

Buy the DVD. ERPS will use the money for whichever loco requres it. Just because 850 belongs to the NRM does not mean money should not be spent on it.

I don't normally specify which loco ERPS should spend the money on, but if you'd prefer your donation to go specifically to 828, then that's absolutely fine.

It sounds as though you somehow disapprove of ERPS caring for a National Collection loco as well as their own one. Are you worried that 828 is being ignored? If so, let me reassure you that there are regular working parties at Ropley, and good progress has been made on the boiler. (I think they are waiting for an inspection at the moment.)

Although the current agreement with the NRM runs for 10 years (or whatever it is), it doesn't necessarily mean that 850 will have to go back at the end of the time. If ERPS are doing a good job, and there is work for the loco, then there's no reason why the agreement should not be extended. Look at 777, for example. This is her third period of mainline running, in the care of the same group. I'd like to think that something similar will happen with 850.

Or look at it another way: would you like a DVD about Lord Nelson? If so, this one is well shot, well edited (though I'm too modest to say so myself!), and very reasonably priced, and your purchase will benefit the loco itself in a small way. If you'd just like to give a donation directly to 828, send me a PM and I'll give you the ERPS Treasurer's address.

    Try please?

It was in the workshop at York on Wednesday, rather than in the Great Hall, scaffolding up around the firebox and from what it looked like, progress being made. We shall see what the mags say, but I have heard it tell that it may not be as bad as has been thought and the engine back this year...

Why bother with "What the mags say" 90% of them are a work of fiction anyway.

We are fortunate enough to have a working member of the ELRPS as a moderator on this forum (Shoddy127), and I'm sure when there is news to report he will be the first to update us with FACTS, not the fiction of the written press.

Or maybe I do know but I have loyalties to those who are involved and I respect! I will always post information as and when I can as I'm sure most people will already know but I certainly will not post to satisfy those who think they need to know.

I am sure that it will be suggested that 850 will be hired to the Mid Hants this summer. After all, every other steam loco is going there, apparently!
