Good stuff! The headboard you brought down last year did look pretty good (if a little out of place on our Austerity!). Which one are you going to bring down this year? :)

Looks like we're in for an exciting (and busy) year at the Gwili. The 150th Anniversary sounds like a fun day - any idea what's been planned for this? Mind you, I hope I don't get shot for saying this on here, but I must admit to being more than a little excited about the prospect of a Diesel Gala...

Its gonna be a good year!

    Cheers,

    Phil

West Wales Return for Visiting Locomotive

The Gwili Railway is pleased to confirm the visit of class 14 D9521 for its Diesel Gala on August 14th/15th.

The event is a return to West Wales for the loco, which, having entered traffic at Bristol Bath Road, was based at Landore (87E) for over half its working life on BR. Following withdrawal in 1969 and sale to the NCB, it was used with many other class members on the Ashington system. The loco returned to South Wales in November 2004, when it moved from the Swanage Railway to the Vale of Glamorgan Railway at Barry Island. Following eviction from the VoG site, it has since been based at the Dean Forest Railway.

During its time at Landore, regular diagrams for the class would have seen this loco visit Felin Fran, the Mond Nickel Works at Clydach, BSC at Port Talbot, Glyncorrwg and Cymmer. However it is likely that this visit marks the westernmost point of D9521's career, although classmate D9530 did venture further West when in industrial use at Gulf's Oil Refinery at Waterston, on Milford Haven.

The loco became a celebrity during its early preservation career, when it was painted in the grey and yellow Railfreight colourscheme, carrying the number 14021.

Whilst at the Gwili Gala, the locomotive is expected to see intensive operation throughout the event, on service trains and the Real Ale Train. It is also expected to see use on photo charters during its stay, as well as being available for 'footplate experience' courses, for which details will be available in due course.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this news if of interest some of you?

Don't forget that we're working on getting a heritage bus-link from Carmarthen station to the railway, to allow people to visit the event by public transport. Hot food (burgers/bacon rolls/hot dogs etc) will be available at Llwyfan Cerrig, along with a range of Welsh icecreams. Visiting locomotives will also be in action on the adjacent 7.25" gauge railway, along with other attractions still being confirmed.

More details to follow! Please support us if you can - hopefully see you there...?

    Cheers,

    Phil.
