I dunno, after reading the above I think if I worked in PR for the NRM I'd be looking for a career doing something a bit less stressful and frustrating - say writing Press releases for Japanese dolphin hunters...

The NRM did the right thing for a general press release. They kept it simple. The plates will not be perfect, there will be imperfections but these have not prevented them from being deemed fit for further use. I am very interested in the views of those who tested these frame sections with regard to their general quality with due respect to their age. On the subject of age does anyone know how old the front 3/4 section is? I suspect post war given the history of the class, frames continued to be renewed up until 1962. It would also be of interest to know how well they compare to modern plate.

My word, go away on business for a few days - to talk about TVR 28 amongst other things, and it's still going on!

It always will be so Anthony, me? I'd read Tom's post 2647 and forget all this knashing of teeth. Mr Riley and his men are moving the job forward and that's good.
Roll on the day when it pulls 8/10 out of KX, that story and pictures would go round the world.

Good news about Scotsman, and looking forward to seeing her back in steam.

I know it's a long time off yet, but is there likely to be a launch event for Scotsman at the NRM? I think giving the people's engine a chance to mingle with the crowds in steam at last would be a great PR opportunity as well as giving something back to those who've donated to her upkeep the last ten years.

When it comes back, will it be running for the next 10 years still?

Then let's hope 4472 is turned out in early BR apple green to match.;)

(Or, even better, turn them both out in post-war LNER apple green as 103 and 163...well, a man can dream!)

My experience is that anything described as "the people's" or "democratic" is anything but.

Like it Ralph, I think the term "Always look on the bright side of life" describes getting Flying Scotsman back in steam quite nicely!

So once the centre cylinder work is complete are we not into putting it all back together again at last ?

Probably only when Mr Riley is as happy with it as he is with his own engines - maybe even more so. The only potential cloud is the need to move to new premises and the timing and work involved in that.

Should we take that to mean 4472 will be finished before the ELR plans to expand its works in summer 2015, necessitating exit of the present tenant?
