In you response to the original post, you said:

"The sad thing is that you do not have the courage to put your own name to this diatribe yet see fit to question the ethics and morals as well as the skills of Messrs Wilcock, Milner, Piggott, Chancellor and Langston"

Sounds to me like an insult...........

Michael , are you not being too sensitive and getting involved in something that is not your concern?

    Regards
    Chris

Yours and my definition of an insult are two different things

I don't buy it these days - stuff I am interested in is readily available and much more up to date on the web as well as frequently far more accurate and less sensational.

But anyone hawking his wares (as the publishers and editors do) and expecting people to pay for it, should expect criticism - that's life.

I'm not sure why some on this forum seem to regard editors/photographers/contributors/image sellers as some sort of deity who are immune from criticism.

The last few issues have been poor in my opinion, don't care much for shunting techniques or how embankments are trimmed.
As a result I haven't bought one for two months, lets hope the December issue is better.

Anyway this is a Heritage Railway thread not an SR one, I may get HR this week as I have had nothing to read for ages.

If I have bought the rights to an item - then I sell them - that's the whole point of copyright

If the original owners were that precious about ownership and credits, then perhaps they should have thought before they sold - or perhaps they did - and still sold

I'm not sure anyone does, we just get tired of the same complaints being made month in month out.

As much as it pains me to say I agree with you: I agree with you.

Perhaps that's because nothing ever seems to get done about them!

If you don't like something in a mag , surely the first point of contact is the editor themselves . It is then their choice as to whether to take those comments on board or not . if they don't then airing those views on a forum that said editor may or may not be a member of is even less likely to provoke a change

Most images now published are often to be found on the internet whether it be Fotopic sites or the Railway Herald Imaging centre or one of the yahoo groups so most magazine's I've already seen a version or that image . Here we have the perils of Digital

People forget that some photographers submit for the pleasure of seeing their pictures in print , some for the money to either fund their past time , donate to a project or because it is their livelyhood . So this chap had Christmas come early . He's probably frustrated as well as , as you have pointed out editors like an exclusive image but then if the editor doesn't talk to the submitting photter and confirms it's usage , an image has a short life where it's news worthyness rapidly dimishes and with it chance of publication and money

Personally the decision to buy a magazine is on the reading content and not on the pictures . If there is nothing worth reading !

I think Riley's Ghost has a point here. As he implies, it can be the case that a photographer doesn't know if the first magazine he sends a photograph to is going to use it, so sends it to another.

I have noticed very similar shots in different magazines in the past - presumably different members of the "gallery" all taking their own unique master shot and submitting it separately!

To be fair, they aren't quite identical pictures.... One was quite obviously taken in the 1960s (with precicely the same locos and stock, in precicely the same condition, and precicely the same position, producing precicely the same steam effects) since its lacking 2 lamposts, one roadsign, a skip and a busstop that have been erected in the meantime....
