Does anyone know the fate of the second nrm turntable, which was there for a long time? Not sure if it went when the roof did, but is the turntable elsewhere in use? And, did the pit get filled or just covered over? Thanks

It is alive and well today turning locos and stock on the NYMR at Pickeering.

It was, as you suspected, removed from the NRM in 1990 when the Main Hall was re-roofed.

With a similar one up for grabs might this be an opportunity to re-instate this?
To me the nrm could have its diesels in the old depot, and steam/coaches in the 2 turntables, other stuff in its ancillary, disused buildings and Leeman Goods.

nothing woke, more how museum's choose to portray collections in the 21st century

Modern open supermarket spaces are probably more flexible display spaces than an old steam shed less suited to thousands of visitors

Quite. A museum is about much more than just a collection of locomotives

A totally unrelated museum I know is learning this the hard way, to much wailing and gnashing of teeth from people who feel one man's legacy is being destroyed as it sells off many of the items he'd accumulated in order to both tell a story and raise funds to maintain the many wooden buildings they were housed in.

Leaving aside the “woke” trigger word that now seems to do no debate, any good, ever…I do wonder if a museum might serve its host “industry” better if it can fire the soul of maybe 1 child in 10, rather than a scattergun plastic pastiche approach that fails to make a lasting impression on any?

Fair challenge. But the NRM, in much like its present form, did help fire that interest in my son.

And it was through a range of exhibits, not just the locomotives.
