Had a trip over to York today to see the 2 rail tours

First was 45690 Leander with the 'York Yuletide Express' running bang on time

All lines are signalled for bi directional running ,this happens regular ,not with steam of course.

I understand that, the point i was making was; that the freight was tearing through Wellingborough at about 9pm on a Saturday night, when i presume their would still be expresses heading north on the same track until late night. Thats what i found disconcerting.

Why should it be disconcerting, as has been pointed out above both lines are bidirectional so there's nothing untoward about two trains travelling together in the same direction, no doubt further south in order to free the northbound line the freight would either slot in, in front or behind the steam.
Don't forget there are many miles of single track in the UK that are used in both directions all the time.

the two trains were occupying the up and down slow lines not the fast lines so i dont understand your concern

Regardless of whether it was the Up, Down, Fast or Slow lines, 9pm or steam and diesel - there is no issue as long as the lines are bidirectional and the trains were running on favourable signal aspects.

Although actually somewhat short of the bufferstops, as is customary nowadays whether the train is loco-hauled or MU.
