Is the nymr unofficial forum down as I have not been able to access it for a few days. The information about the locomotive provision seems more encouraging than in previous years. To the outside viewer (all be it a member of nymr) I detect a more positive out look for the line. Is this a reasonable conclusion?

It was down but is now back up, albeit with some short outages - problems with the host servers.

I think there good signs of a new, positive outlook on the NYMR and I hope there will be a much more reliable steam service this year - ironically, in view of the two extra diesels arriving to provide additional summer coverage!

Whitby - Grosmont all services suspended.

    From the NYMR Website
Due to a hole appearing in the trackbed, all train services between Grosmont and Whitby are currently cancelled. Network Rail advise that they are aiming to have the line repaired and open again on Tuesday morning, but meanwhile, for Monday, there will be a replacement bus service in operation on the NYMR. Bus timings are largely in line with our red timetable, but any passengers planning to travel on the 0915 ex Grosmont, or the 1800 ex Whitby, do need to make special arrangements with us in advance please. Further updates will be posted as soon as information becomes available. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

From the Nat Rail enquiries website
Emergency engineering work at Ruswarp means trains cannot run between Sleights and Whitby. This is expected to continue until the end of service on Monday 2 May 2016.

Road transport has been requested to operate but availability is limited due to events in the area and road blocks in place.

Passengers at Sleights are advised to wait for the road closures to be lifted in order to get a coach to the outskirts of Whitby or make their own arrangements.

Road transport is unable to depart Whitby until at least 18:00.

    Hi,

SWMBO and I will be visiting the NYMR for a week at the end of this month. Are the 'Teaks' in limited use and if so, when? The Boss wants to have a ride in them if possible.

    Many thanks in anticipation.

At the moment, the Teaks are tending to be used everyday, except perhaps when there is a lunchtime Pullman running. Their normal Monday to Saturday diagram is the 11:00 from Pickering and 15:40 from Grosmont. The requirement of 3 Whitby sets gives little flexibility on this, but they seem to be able not to be used when there is a Moorlander at lunctime as I say.

Many thanks Steven. I have just relayed your msg to SWMBO and she is smiling. We have a booking for the Diner on the Thursday which is the other important thing she wanted to do. So, providing there are no serious steam problems that week, she will be a very happy bunny!!!!

Having returned from our trip to the NYMR, I can report that we had a good time and cannot wait to return to Grosmont again. We joined the Crossing Club and covered the membership cost with the cheaper drinks. We also ate well thanks to the Refreshment Room on Platform 2 and the Diner on Thursday. Everyone we met on the railway was friendly and made us very welcome, especially in the MPD.

The only thing to disappoint me was the lack of internet access in Station House. (It has taken me three days to catch up with this forum!) If I had had access, I may have been aware of Ms White’s visit and used it as an excuse to delay our departure! As it was, SWMBO did not want to return the keys and was hoping this week’s guests might cry off at the very last minute and we could stay for another week.

So, thank you NYMR and Grosmont for another excellent week’s holiday.

Hi all, hopefully someone can assist me! I am on holiday in North Yorkshire with extended family next week and trying to persuade the others that a trip to Whitby and a possible ride to Grosmont would be a good thing to do! Last year (when I managed to visit Pickering) I was pointed towards the excellent NYMR Diesel website which allows you to work out what trains are steam hauled by virtue of not being diesel, and I have been checking that every so often. It seems there are only two steam locos able to run to Whitby at the moment so I was wondering if anyone knew of the plan for when those two would be running or the days when one or the other would be substituted for a diesel. Days in question are Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday next week 18th-19th-20th. Many thanks in advance!

Sorry to disappoint but not even Control or the MPD could tell you that. The diagrams are allocated with locos on a daily basis the day before and even this can change in the morning. If a diesel is being substituted, the preferred diagram is the 'short' diagram which involves the 10.40 ex Gro, 12.45 ex Whit, 14.30 ex Gro & 16.40 ex Whit. Don't rely on this, though!

Thanks Steve! I was just wondering if there was a planned program of maintenance and wash outs etc! Thanks for the reply, hopefully will get up there and will see what turns up!

There is obviously a planned programme of maintenance and washouts but, quite often things are brought forward for any number of reasons. For example, if a loco needs to be taken out of service for a couple of days for necessary repairs near the end of a washout period, it can make sense to do the washout at the same time, which then may also have a knock-on effect with other washouts as you don't want two locos on washout together. When you are playing with a minimum number of available locos, the juggling can be quite hard. Hopefully, the return of 44806 and 61264 will ease things considerably and the forthcoming entry into service of 80136 will see the end of unplanned diesel haulage for the most part. Seven nominally available steam locos will be a luxury not had for some considerable time. Fingers crossed!

So that leaves presumably 76079 on:
    0918 Grosmont-Whitby
    1000 Whitby-Pickering
    1200 Pickering-Whitby
    1400 Whitby-Pickering
    1610 Pickering-Whitby
    1800 Whitby-Grosmont

Although expect it will need to take on more coal somewhere?

Thanks for the update, fingers crossed the plan is to head over to Whitby tomorrow afternoon. Nice to see the Deltic out, that scores as many points as steam with my extended family so may get to head over!

Indeed - just ONE working steam loco on the first day of the peak summer season Gold timetable.

With the 1000 Pickering cancelled, Pickering sees just two steam departures all day and the first not until 1200, so waiting an hour over a coffee for the following train is hardly an option for most visitors.

I'm resigned to the NYMR being box these days, but was hoping on (for me) the perfect pairing this summer of 63395 and 61264 on one day. I'd be there even if all else box. But I wasn't up to speed that the Q6 is going on its summer hols to Shildon. Seems a bit careless loaning a loco when you have none left on shed to use?

I don't think it would have been the NYMR's first choice, but as they do not own it, they do not have the ultimate say. At the moment, 76079 out, 45428 on washout, 63395 being prepared for Shildon, 6046 failed last week (I'm not sure exactly what happened, but was left at Levisham), 44806 very nearly there (a hot box on the tender still needs some work), B1 needs a little work but should be out very soon, 80136 still has couple of weeks work I believe . You can sort of see why 45212 was 'not needed', but it might still have been useful, it has been a long time since we had an operational loco sitting round doing nothing during this part of the season!

The NYMR website has been somewhat quiet on this, but I see it has now been updated for 19th reporting what seems to be one duty is cancelled, starting with 1100 Pickering.

Looking at RTT it looks like NYMR may have clobbered NR for 20 minutes on 2D40 which is not good, although I haven't checked if there were other reasons.

20 mph speed limit on the branch has caused significant issues.
