Thanks! It took some finding - walked up trough the forest from the hotel. New metal fence to stop people trespassing from the far side? hardly think there is need.....

Provided by the Carnforth Coal baron, surely not?

More likely provided by a Russian or Colombian coal mine?

Premium quality should always take priority for turns like the WCME. An experienced coal merchant is able to hazard a good guess as to quality and fitness for purpose of a batch. .

If it's 502, there will be a diesel to assist and heat?

Beter late than never. 46233 between Docker and Grayrigg, about 10 down after a 5 min late departure from Carnforth, and something different from a dark, cold and windy Kirby Stephen on the return

Ye gods clagging like Tangmere. All that dark smoke from a Duchess does lead you to think that all was not well in the fire department.
    That shot at KS brilliant.

Just what I was thinking, Ralph. Not usual to see so much clag coming from her.

Plenty not properly combusted there for sure. Must've been a tough gig for the fireman, deserves credit.

So presumably the train not turned at Carlisle? I thought platform space was at a premium at present?

She had a bad run to Newcastle a while ago that was blamed on bad coal too. At least this time she managed to complete the trip. As Ralph says, it's unusual to see her clagging like that. Stunning image from jsm8b though.

So now you are an expert mainline fireman Mr Maxim?.....how can you as an armchair expert differentiate between poor coal or indifferent firing techniques?

Photo has lots of clag = incomplete combustion.
    Bad coal reportedly.
my point therefore was bad coal makes any fireman's job more difficult?
Sympathy for the guy on the shovel and praise his efforts on the day.
    All fair?
