    Hi Guys.

After the NYMR had thrirS160 restored at Olesnice, a pile of bits from a second S160, was left as the NYMR has expressed an interest in a second loco, but this never happened. This engine laid around the worksfor years.

But then Ian bought a large collection of S160 bits from Hungary, I sent Ian the set of frames and boiler from the scrap S160 in Poland, and S160 cylinder blocks from two other scrap locos. I think I sent him a tender frame also, as I recall him saying in an email it had a GWR pattern hand brake fitted! So where is this engine now?

    Another mystery?

I don't know what your talking about, but if it helps they were in red oxide and had been gritblasted.

You might ask about that locomotive on Mr Riley's forum intheworkforums.co.uk/

The description sounds very much like the frame stored at Ruddington purchased with 1631 from Andy Booth. Not missing just tucked away.

Ah ha! So what's the plan? There is a boiler for it, and a tender somewhere, so is it ever going to be another loco? I could find you it's proper ID. :)

Derek Foster, who was at the time the owner of 7298 and 76079 (and later S160 5197), had a plant hire business at Kirkby, Merseyside, where he also restored his locos. Ian Riley did some contract work there, both for Derek on 76079, and for the KWVR on 48431.
I seem to remember a set of S160 frames appearing there; they had the rear axle missing, and the pistons had punched through the front cylinder covers.

The USATC numbers and builders numbers for the UK based locos are on Wikipedia (looks fairly comprehensive for a Wiki article) showing that 1631 at Ruddington is under restoration and 2138 is a spares loco for 1631. 2364 is shown as chassis only - also for spares for 1631.

There should be 1 from China, 1 from Turkey, 3 from Poland, including my bits which was a nearly complete engine, and 3 from Hungary. All the Hungarian ones I saw had seized pistons, and that's why I sent 2 good blocks from Poland, so by my reckoning, there should be enough bits to build 8 S160's. It seems a shame to have a loco just as spares. :(

There are indeed 8 in the UK:

1631 Alco 70284 Hungary MÁV 411.388 Great Central Railway (Nottingham)
2138 Alco 70620 Hungary MÁV 411.380 Great Central Railway (Nottingham) source of strategic spares for 1631
2364 Baldwin 69621 Hungary MÁV 411.xxx Great Central Railway (Nottingham) Chassis only, source for strategic spares for 1631
5197 Lima 8856 China Funshum Industrial Railway, #KD6.463 Churnet Valley Railway
6046 Baldwin 72080 Hungary MÁV 411.144 Churnet Valley Railway
2253 Baldwin 69496 Poland PKP Tr.203.208 North Yorkshire Moors Railway - Cosmetically overhauled and loaned to National Railway Museum at Shildon until 2015.
5820 Lima 8758 Poland PKP Tr.203.474 Keighley and Worth Valley Railway
3278 Baldwin 70340 Italy FS 736.073; Greece SEK Θγ575 Tyseley previously named #701 Franklin D. Roosevelt

I make it 1 from China, 2 from Poland, 4 from Hungary, 1 from Greece.

Not sure where your spares would be amongst that lot!

Well, that's the problem. I did not know Ian bought a 4th one. So it could be the 3rd polish engine was shared around, because the all the Hungarian engines had seized pistons, and I don't mean a bit of rust. They all looked like they had been concreted in! Shame it's lost, I have pictures of it in Poland as a rolling chassis with the the boiler off. It too was detubed and grit basted and painted in red lead.

That is not in Poland - that's a picture of the dump at Thessaloniki in Greece?

John did you say they were using dynamite to recover scrap from those locos in Poland?

Yes, that's what they did. That's the blast area with high banks, but lots of boiler fittings and bits of boiler made it to freedom, by flying all over the woods behind. My first visit there I came in through a hole in the fence, just behind the blast area, and there were bits everywhere! Can you imagine Dia blowing up a Bullied? :D

OK, we have 4 Hungarian engines accounted for:
1631 Alco 70284 Hungary MÁV 411.388 Great Central Railway (Nottingham)
2138 Alco 70620 Hungary MÁV 411.380 Great Central Railway (Nottingham) spares for 1631
2364 Baldwin 69621 Hungary MÁV 411.xxx Great Central Railway (Nottingham) Chassis only, spares for 1631
6046 Baldwin 72080 Hungary MÁV 411.144 Churnet Valley Railway

    Only 2 of 3 Polish
2253 Baldwin 69496 Poland PKP Tr.203.208 NYMR- loaned to National Railway Museum until 2015.
5820 Lima 8758 Poland PKP Tr.203.474 Keighley and Worth Valley Railway

    And these two:
3278 Baldwin 70340 Italy FS 736.073; Greece SEK Θγ575 Tyseley previously named #701 Franklin D. Roosevelt

5197 Lima 8856 China Funshum Industrial Railway, #KD6.463 Churnet Valley Railway

The Polish one in bits I sent over is still missing. And the cylinder blocks went where? :(

6046 at Churnet Valley is receiving a replacement cylinder block, that may account for one of them.
