<br />
Of course, its function today is a lot different to &#039;Steamtown&#039; days but I&#039;d just like to spare a thought for the amazing work Dr. Peter Beet did on securing the site as a museum in the late 60&#039;s.<br />
<br />
Along with many others I was proud and priviliged to work alongside this incredible personality whose eye for free publicity and making few bob &#039;for the engines&#039; was legendary!<br />

The first was to wait somewhere suitable, see what turned up, take a ride if you fancied the trip and then decide what you did next.  The alternative was to plan in advance, look for where there were opportunities to change plan, but usually stick to what you intended.<br />

It was, of course, a sensible person who ensured that any planned connections would include some leeway in case there were delays...and at the end of...<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[A common situtation for very many of us I am sure, whether from a Gasthof in Germany or elsewhere  when steam was running in  normal service. This was whilst I was on my car trip to Germany for steam in late May/early June 1972. Starting on the Mosel railway and heading off to the Craislheim area. On my own to start, but I picked up brother  <a href="https://national-preservation.com/members/28093/" class="username" data-user="28093, @gricerdon">@gricerdon</a>   Don at Crailshein later in my more than a week long trip. The Gasthof below was near Salmrohr close to the Trier-Koblenz...<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Two wonderful Merchant Navy pacifics that are both still with us.<br />
<br />
To me their finest hour was on 24 July 1964, and I am posting this a few minutes after 35009 had arrived at Waterloo on the up Atlantic Coast Express on that day.<br />

24 July 1964 is given a special feature in my SR 1960s Steam Locos Memoirs book - of which I now have  a 709 page first draft completed.<br />
