The Isle of Wight Steam Railway will be holding a steam gala on May 26,27 and 28 2018. We are celebrating the return to steam of all 3 Ivatt steam locomotives that were gifted to us by the Ivatt trust. The event details are being worked up at the moment but I urge you to keep at least one day free!

Does that imply 46447 could make an appearance..?

That would be very nice and a fitting tribute to The Ivatt trust. I understand that negotiations are in progress to allow a visit to take place. I cannot say more than that at this stage.

Fair enough, but two obvious questions about 46447:- firstly, if 46447 does pay a visit to the Isle of Wight will it be fitted with a smaller chimney for its visit as per 41298 and 41313? Secondly, will it be fitted with air braking? Without these two features, I would assume that it will not be able to pull any carriages and will probably only be able to operate on a very limited section of the line.

I think it's a great idea, however, and will be watching for more details.

46447 is currently fitted with the shorter chimney. I assume you would have to do double heading for the braking situation.

It does have the shorter chimney and yes IF we were able to get it we would have to double head or use it on freight trains only (not a preferred option) The team involved are considering options but until the present custodians are in full agreement regarding a loan have not done to much work on the event. We have a very close working relationship with the East Somerset and we would not want to upset that by jumping the gun.

Had it confirmed this morning,The East Somerset railway have agreed to release tender version Ivatt 46447 for a short visit to the Isle of Wight. It will be at the May event! Thanks to the East Somerset railway for this. Got to start planning what to do with it now.

could you through pipe it and fit a brake handle simular to what was done with LUL steam on the met locos? then that way you could top and tail it with the other ivatt providing the air ?

I expect something like that will happen. The technical people did similar when another loco visited a few years ago.

In principle that could be done, but the other locos and the carriages would need to be fitted with a main reservoir pipe as well. The Westinghouse system on the Island is single pipe.

Blimey ...... by Island standards, that's a veritable leviathan! Will it fit the headshunts?

So not as much 'fun' as they have at La'al Ratty every time a Romney loco visits! :)

We hope to sort out some method of getting the Ivatt tender loco to Wootton on all trains. It will have to be double headed. It could also work a train of ballast hoppers with the shark brakevan at some point perhaps. Feedback suggests that this may not be popular with those who like to ride behind the locomotives so we are undecided on that at the moment.

Would it not be possible to top and tail the tender engine and the bogie rake with one of the ivatts, as long as a suitable braking system can be worked out that way, if the tender engine is at the wooton end the tank loco at the Ryde end it may work out workable you will of course have to somehow sort out a water tanker from the show ground to top up the tender .
