Oswestry is to host its first model railway show since the 1970s at the Cambrian Heritage Railways station this summer.
Organised in conjunction with the Borders Model Railway Club and billed as the ‘Cambrian RailEx’, the event will take place between 10 and 1700hrs on Sunday, July 21 at the railway station in Oswestry town centre.
No fewer than 14 layouts have been booked to attend, which will be displayed on both ground and first floors, the Victorian building benefiting from a lift to the latter, meaning it is accessible to all.
The admission price of £6 for adults and £5 concessions includes a ride in the brake van train between Oswestry station and Middleton Road Bridge – in addition to a trip on the CHR's other operation at Llynclys, four miles south of the Welsh border market town. Children will be admitted for free to the model show.
The layouts in attendance cover a range which it is hoped will appeal to all model railway enthusiasts, from 'N', '00', '0' and '009'. Poignantly, a model which serves as a living memorial to the popular late CHR and Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways volunteer Alun Evans will go on show after a refresh by his mother Ann and brother Gareth. Alun passed away in tragic circumstances in 2009 and helped to build the model with his family when he was in his teens. The 'Algar Valley' is a freelance 009 layout but follows Welsh narrow gauge practice.
Traders who have confirmed their attendance at the show include Buffer Books, Ian's Trains, PLM Models, Walsworth Models and Whitchurch Models.
Organiser Kevin Whittle of the Borders Model Railway Club, said: “300 people alone attended our last show at Llandrinio village hall show on December 27, so we're expecting 350-500 at the very least. This is a great opportunity to raise the profile of both organisations.”

    Hope it's of interest,

    Gareth :)

    NOTES TO EDITORS
    # Cambrian Heritage Railways is the umbrella body created in 2009 to deliver a heritage railway for the Oswestry area – and which has seen the once rival Cambrian Railways Society and Cambrian Railways Trust join forces.
    # Public trains operate at two separate sites – at Llynclys and Oswestry. Work to restore the Gobowen to Blodwell branch, which will eventually link the two locations, is currently underway.

Please find below a press release I've issued to local & regional media just prior to the event.
Also, take peek at the 'Algar Valley Railway' on my Flickr photostream at http://www.flickr.com/photos/14627018@N00/ - but there are no photos of the engine built in memory of my brother - you'll have to wait till Sunday to see that.
    Hope it's of interest,
    Gareth :)

(head)Oswestry Model Railway Show this Sunday

Oswestry is to host its first model railway show since 1970s at the Cambrian Heritage Railways (CHR) station this Sunday (July 21).
Organised in conjunction with the Borders Model Railway Club and billed as the ‘Cambrian RailEx’, the event will take place between 10 and 1700hrs at the railway station in Oswestry town centre.
No fewer than 16 layouts have been booked to attend, which will be displayed on both ground and first floors, the Victorian building benefiting from a lift to the latter, meaning it is accessible to all.
The admission price of £6 for adults and £5 concessions includes a ride in the brake van train between Oswestry station and Middleton Road Bridge – in addition to a trip on the CHR's other operation at Llynclys, four miles south of the Welsh border market town. Children will be admitted for free to the model show.
The layouts in attendance cover a range which it is hoped will appeal to all model railway enthusiasts, from 'N', '00', '0', '016.5' and '009'. Poignantly, a model which serves as a living memorial to the popular late CHR and Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways volunteer Alun Evans will go on show after a refresh by his mother Ann and brother Gareth. Alun, who grew up in Llanfyllin, passed away in tragic circumstances in 2009 and helped to build the model with his family when he was in his teens. The 'Algar Valley' is a freelance 009 layout but follows Welsh narrow gauge practice. A model diesel locomotive constructed in his honour will also be unveiled on the day, complete with its specially made nameplates.
Other layouts due to be in attendance include Simon Smith's modern image DCC-controlled 'Stoke City' Motley Shed, Robert Newman's 1950s British Railways-era 'Motley Shed' and Martin Rich's 7mm scale 'Bumph Mine'.
Traders who will be in attendance at the show include Buffer Books, Ian's Trains, PLM Models and Whitchurch Models.
An added attraction is the opportunity to ride a vintage bus between Oswestry and Llynclys railway stations in the shape of Tanat Valley Coaches' 1961-built Leyland Tiger Cub. Normally used on wedding hires, adult return tickets will cost £1, with children free.
Visitors will also quite literally be a able to take a train journey back in time thanks to the display of local vintage railway tickets at Oswestry station. Refreshments will be on offer in the CHR's popular Buffers tea room.
CHR Press Officer Gareth Evans, said: “300 paying people alone attended the last Borders Model Show at Llandrinio village hall on December 27, so we're expecting 350-500 at the very least. This is a great opportunity to raise the profile of both organisations. ”
