Edit - Diesel hauled from Chester on the outbound journey only according to the VT website.

That may be because it's easier, shorter and less time consuming to detach at Chester, turn on the triangle and follow on to Llandudno, than running the steam from Llandudno all the way to Valley to turn and service.

On the Welsh Mountaineer, the train stays in Chester on platform if I remember correctly while the locomotive turns, as there is usually no diesel on the rear to aid in turning and hauling to Llandudno Jnc. For this railtour, it appears the Castle will haul out to Chester North Jnc and then remain on rear while the 47 hauls the tour to Llandudno.

Yes , you're right Jonny, I think the last time I saw the WM at Chester some years back there was a diesel with it,

When I did VT to Llandudno a few years back, the 47 was tailgunner the entire trip and the whole train turned on the triangle at Chester.

I believe it was the same trip Bob Meanley was less than impressed at being buzzed by a light aircraft between Crewe & Chester if that helps date it.

5043 will going to Llandudno Jn again on May 27th but for that trip, according to the VT website, it'll be 5043 leading all the way from Nuneaton to Llandudno Jn. For some reason I had it in my head there was a triangle at the junction with the Conwy Valley Line but I've just looked at it on Google Earth and there clearly isn't.

"The Seaside Flyer" May 2014 is the trip you are referring too. Along with other coverage of this outing, BM's forthright condemnation of light aircraft antics is memorably captured at Post 47 of the relevant thread via link as follows..........

Interesting read, as it happens I'm just going through some photos from 5043's most recent outing where I caught an aerial presence...

Also caught it going slowly at a gloomy St Andrews first thing, not sure about this shot but it looks better to me now on the computer then it did on the camera.

A video from Stafford this morning.
There should have been some footage of the approach but it met with a digital mishap - my finger didn't press the record button properly :Arghh::Banghead:

OT, I know, but I think many Rams fans have good reason to be thankful to Birmingham and their choices in the managerial department :)
