I am aware of the need for accurate valve setting etc, and in my dim and distant teenage days remember assisting with doing so, but is anyone able to provide an idiot's guide as to how valve setting is done?

Including any differences between the various types of valve gear/types of valve etc.

    Thanks in advance.

D W Harvey's book "A Manual of Steam Locomotive Restoration and Preservation" (David and Charles, 1980, ISBN 0 7153 7770 1) has a chapter devoted to valve setting. It deals mostly with Stephenson's and Walschaert's valve gears and covers both slide and piston valves.
