Trains hauled by Riley locos mostly seem to manage without a banker.

Recent trains hauled by WCR steam locos have also managed on their own.

It has certainly been more the exception latterly than had become routine. So a Riley managed loco with latterday policy applied should result in a nailed on favourable outcome?

  4. Forgive me but hasn't this thread titled The Great Britain drifted off course? FS is only one loco in the whole trip. More pertinent at this stage (to me anyway) is when are the times coming out?

The RTC says that timings about GBX will not appear this side of Easter. Nothing new there then as Network Rail doesn't do advance notice. However, it's hoped that NR will at least have the courtesy to do the whole trip in one batch so that those travelling can see how things will map out across all the various days via RTT not to mention those who will track the trip and want to plan their own journeys.

  8. Planning to follow from Llanvihangel to Bristol, then on down into Devon and Cornwall and then back to Bristol. Quite looking forward to it although sad that there is no GW traction on the SW legs.

Well, judging by the RTC booking page the GB X is full, except for the day trip to Oban. So the market is there.

And now the burning question is whether or not GBX will get a decent path out of KGX? With no pick-up in the suburbs it will be non stop to water at Holme. That's only 70 odd miles so 80 minutes, say, is hardly going to be all that demanding. But my fear is that West Coast will opt for the same old known paths when they put in the request to NR and we end up with 90 or 95 minutes. One would have thought that by choosing the right departure time it should be possible to get to Hitchin on the FL and then go SL. But this is the ECML and the art of the possible only seems likely when DBC planners are in charge!

Makes me think that this wont be the last after all. If the bookings are good and this does run well this year - which I think it will given the engines selected - then it will make it look more feasible for it to continue and if the financial benefits prevail, then I think the tour will continue into the future.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that if RTC elected to go out in triumph after GBX one or more together of the putative new TOCs might put an offering together of this sort. A rumour is circulating that ROGS is intending to submit an application adding steam to its licence in addition to the VT and LSL plans already announced. Add the existing DBC resource, a collaborative effort could have some potential.

Railcam at Crewe HC shows DoS has a fire lit, so guessing that the work has been completed and steam test is underway.

So if Royal Scot is out of gauge for the Cathedrals Express tour returning from Bishops Lydeard what path will GB X be taking from Westbury to get back to Paddington?
