Swanage Diesel Gala - 4th-7th May 2017

    Sorry it's taken a bit longer than usual to get this out to you all, but here is the news for this Gala....there are more locos to be added in the near future!....We look forward to seeing you in May!

    'The Swanage Railway are delighted to announce the official details and first visiting locomotives of the 12th annual Diesel Gala and Dorset Beer Festival, to be held from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th May. We can reveal that the theme for the Thursday 4th May Preview Day will be "Dawn of the Diesels", with the Diesel Gala following on from 'Strictly Bulleid' in commemorating the 50th Anniversary since the End of Southern Steam.

    Preview Day:
    The ‘Dawn of the Diesels’ Preview Day will see Class 47, No. 47192 and resident Class 33 No. 33111 in action alongside our regular steam service, hauled by our Standard Tank '80104', masquerading as 80146 for the 2017 season. The first departure from Swanage will be at 10:00, with services running right through the day.

    Diesel Gala:
    The main three-day event from Friday 5th May to Sunday 7th May will see an intensive three-train diesel service operate between Norden, Corfe Castle, Harmans Cross and Swanage from 8am to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and from 8am to 7pm on Sunday.

    Locomotive line-up:
    The Swanage Railway are pleased to be able to announce the initial line up of locomotives to be in action during the three-day gala. More visiting locos will be added in due course, so watch this space!

    Including our resident locomotives, the loco line up (subject to availability) will be:

    Driver Experiences:
    For those wanting the ultimate experience, on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th May, we are offering the opportunity to drive one of our the resident Class 33s from Norden to the Network Rail boundary near Worgret Junction. The number of footplate experiences are strictly limited and are available for £120. Please note that participants must be over the age of 18.     Dorset Beer Festival and Evening Services:
    The ever popular Dorset Beer Festival will return to Corfe Castle station, where the railway's own ‘Old Pusher’ ale will be on sale. Other attractions include the museum at Corfe Castle, and trade stands at Swanage.

    On the Friday and Saturday evening a ‘Beerex' train and a the Wessex Belle's Bistro dining train will also be operating. Advance booking for the Bistro is essential and can be found at http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/the-friday-night-bistro. Traction for the evening services will be advertised in forthcoming weeks.

    Ticket/Fare Information:
    Fares for the 'Dawn of the Diesels' Preview Day on Thursday 4th May are as follows:-
    Adult £20 Freedom Ticket (Freedom Tickets offer unlimited travel throughout the day).
    Child £13 Freedom Ticket
    Family (2 adults + 3 children) £55 Freedom Ticket
    Single and Return Fares are also available.

    Fares for the Diesel Gala from Friday 5th May – Sunday 7th May are as follows:-
    Adult Rover Tickets: £25 One Day Rover, £38 Two Day Rover, £46 Three Day Rover.
    Child Rover Tickets: £18 One Day Rover, £28 Two Day Rover, £36 Three Day Rover.
    Discounted fares are available to 'Priv' card holders and CAMRA members at £18 One Day Rover, £28 To Day Rover, £36 Three Day Rover.
    Single and Return Fares are also available.

    Heard that a Colas 56 & 47 are going but I think there's only 3 Colas 47's and they've all done galas already so I'm not sure how much of a draw they'll be, same with the grids though TBF, probably GBRF shed as well

    The Swanage Railway Diesel Gala webpage does not yet mention that 47749 ‘City of Truro' also appears courtesy of Colas Rail.
    Incidentally, the kind provision of locos by Colas Rail is related to their marking the 10th Anniversary of UK rail operations. Subject to availability, Colas Rail will be supplying 47749 'City of Truro' and a Class 56 from their mainline fleet for all 3 days of the Gala. Proceeds from hiring the two locos will be donated to the Colas Rail nominated charity 'The Railway Children'.

    still a good line up with out colas 47, but a replacement would be good, agree with a 37 be nice

    The timetable is now online and shows 73144!! Now thar didn't used to exist, I take it its a place holding number to show where the 73/1 will be used, personally hoping for 128 but you never know

    Someone is saying the shed MIGHT be 744, I don't know if that's worked before or not, a lot have done galas before so I might not be a Virgin so to speak

    Yes, but it might be another place holder to show what the shed will do rather than the actual number, bit like 73144 which definitely ain't right
