    I very much doubt the SVR set the prices at a level that would have led to a loss on the hire fees. Did you think that they had?

    No, I thought it was a reasonable assumption that the rail fares would cover the hire costs, but was not privy to the hire fees ( and had no reason to be aware) so was unable to draw a firm conclusion.
    I suppose there was a degree of certainty in this instance, unlike a "normal" gala loco hire. Cost of hiring the two celebrity locomotives divided by the number of available seats, and the expectation that all those seats would be sold.

    The published financials demonstrate the wisdom of the SVR in running this event.

    The railway did not suffer from the absence of those who boycotted the event in protest at the lack of overnight trains.
