David Wilcock exposes the true story about an insurance auditor from Bedfordshire who, completely off the books and off the record, took the controls of a whole host of locomotives out on the main line during the 1950s and 60s – without ever being a qualified BR driver!

We present two marvellous recreations of the past this month, with four pages dedicated to the new-build Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Baldwin 2-4-2T No. E762 Lyn, which was officially unveiled 82 years to the day since the L&B closed.

We also show the Great Western Dean-era in colour, thanks to Adrian Knowles brilliantly colourised shot of ‘Armstrong’ class 4-4-0 No. 16 Brunel – surely one of the most elegant locomotives ever built.

Elsewhere we round-up the surviving pre-Grouping Scottish locomotives and what prospect they have for steaming in the future.

Toby Jennings recounts the colourful history of Gresley’s ‘N2s’ and what’s happening at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

As always, Steam Railway brings you the very latest standard gauge, narrow gauge, Irish, main line and industrial steam news from across the UK and around the world.

You can read all this and more in the latest edition of Steam Railway – the world’s biggest selling steam magazine. On sale now!
