Genuine question. Did BR have female loco cleaners in the late 50s and early 60s when 60103 was in double chimney form?
I know women stepped into such roles during WW2 but unaware if they continued after the men who'd done the job previously returned home fro war.

Pendennis was on display in the works with information about the history between the two locos but it would probably have been a bit crass to have moved it out alongside Scotsman at this stage - bit like the mother of the groom upstaging the bride. Hopefully once Pendennis has had its own relaunch, the two can meet up as a third event.

I asked this and I was told yes they did at one or two London sheds when there was a chronic labour shortage at the end of the 50s. They were employed as just that and were not in the line of promotion for footplate grades

You live and learn. Have never seen a peacetime picture of female cleaners though.

Google him as Jack advertises himself as a professional photographer.

Indeed, I apologise for even suggesting that something written in that learned journal was anything but the truth.

Looks like the photos haven't been photoshopped which makes a nice change, what with it being Union of South Africa I am sure Dacre could wring something out of the story.
