I like the idea of the Dalesmans starting from Chester, and at that price I reckon a trip will be in order next year :)

I wonder what the outward route is for the Chester runs---Coast or Shap. I guess we'll just have to wait for the times. Or will they switch the loco from Carnforth to Hellifield and send the train via Clitheroe?

    Very keen prices!

Have not seen the ad but Dalesmans have traditionally been steam on and off at Hellifield then out and back S&C. Appreciate that may be no guide to the latest plan though.

The Chester ones only state return via S & C.

Since the steam comes on at Carnforth then it's Shap outbound, and back S&C to Hellifield, then diesel back to Chester.

They seem to be missing a valuable opportunity in not emphasising the Chester runs include steam over Shap as well. All the more surprising when it is such remarkable value set against the a CME of largely the same steam itinerary.

I cannot see that it requires any emphasis, the enthusiasts will know from reading the ad that it must be going over Shap, the non enthusiasts are not particularly bothered as they want to see the S&C.
I think you are making a mountain out of etc etc.....

No mountains other than the unmentioned Cumbrian variety, just think they are missing a marketing trick. Makes no odds to me personally just wish for maximum success.

Today's Spa en route with a pair of 37s however from York you will not be surprised to hear that NR have decreed that one of them has to be the motive power to Scarborough.

Not quite, Ralph. 45699 will be on the front and a 37 will remain on the rear and is expected to assist.

Assuming there are no fires today, the same will apply for Saturday's job, with 60103.

Just for a bit of fun I thought I'd compare the Scot's good run on Tuesday with the winter 59/60 Waverley schedule (the Waverley being the train which stopped at Hellifield, Appleby and Carlisle in those days and was I guess a Holbeck Scot turn at that point, or was it a Brit. ).

    20/6/17 HFD-APP actual 65m ; early 1960 schd 57m
    APP-CAR actual 37m ; 1960 schd 33m
    CAR-APP actual 43m ; 1960 sched 39m
    APP-HFD actual 67m ; 1960 schd 51m

Now I should think you've got to deduct a couple of minutes from the current time for getting out of/into the goods loops. Then I should imagine the Waverley will have been limited to maybe ten coaches? Then there are the restrictions at Dent Station and Ribblehead Viaduct which affect the southbound run. Then I don't know what the nominal line speed limit was in those days across the top and down the hill. Bert Hooker's book refers to 'galloping along in the 80s' with the famous run of 35012 where they got stopped at Settle Jct southbound and nearly ran out of water. So maybe there was no official restriction?

Overall, hats off to 46115, her crews and those who prepare her and let's hope she comes back to the main line again.
