Now that you mention it, that sounds a lot more like it.

The two ex-departmental Hawksworth Brake Thirds I've seen certainly conform to that notion - both 2232 (ex-GWSR, now at Didcot) & 2242 (under restoration at Quainton) retained their corridor screens & doors and compartment partitions, but had their Lav removed & Guard's compartment knocked through into the Van.

However, having a fairly complete interior can present a serious challenge. The Dreadnought falls into that category as it retains all its partitions, screens, internal doors & both lavs but will need serious frame repairs that might mean stripping all that out.

    Hello,
Another reason why the SVR,SDR Didcot and to some extent WSR obtained a lot of the C&W stock both GWR & LNER was down to the late David Rouse,of GWR 3205 fame. I understand he recorded the dates of a considerable amount of disposed GWR carriage and wagon stock and it was well known that he would stop the locomotive he was driving and take photos of unusual carriages and wagons. (He was an ex BR steam loco driver.)

That brake coach looks impressive. It seem unusual with the flat sides though.

It looks to be for storage initially, in the future who knows? The following link is for Carl Watson Railway photos which show the 3 bodies inside Eastleigh works.

One thing is for certain with pre British Railways coaches. The discerning travelling public [who as I think I've mentioned elsewhere pick up most of the bill for our hobby. In the form of fares, food and gifts etc] are quite interested in these coaches. Speaking as a member of LNERCA when chatting to the public, they can be quite surprised at not only the costs involved, but the lengths we've gone to to restore the coaches. They'll say surely the timber is the expensive item or can you still get the right sized panels/replacement parts? Once you highlight the cost of the "secondary bits and bobs" [for instance the 7 panes of safety glass fitted to the 7 compartment sliding doors of Thompson TK 1623 on the NYMR cost £900 as they'd been engraved 3rd had the top edge "frosted and a pair of holes in for the handle to slide'em up/down] the price of the timber shrinks in comparison. They are also quite surprised that it doesn't cost any extra to travel in them, other than the 1st class suppliment in the G.N. invalid saloon as it still has one end modified as an observation salooon. It having been converted to a Civil Engineers inspection saloon with the vestibules removed and windows fitted.

The main thing is be the coach an LNER, Southern, LMS or Great Western they are so different and [especially the LNER Teaks] "olde Worlde" if you will, from the Golden Age of rail travel, that ended the day that terribly "nice" Mr Hitler:mad: marched into Poland.

Sorry they aren't B set coaches as they would be brake composites to form B sets.

Those two coaches have come up before and when they are some of the last GWR non corridor coaches left it is a shame.

I wont suggest them to a group I know as they have built up the skills to rebuild coaches like these. One they are doing now they have to replace nearly all the timber body as it was so far gone, but the body hadn't collapsed.

Yes there is a lot of work involved in restoring these coaches and more we can get Jo Public to realise the coaches they are travelling in are old coaches even all the MK1 coaches are at least 50 years old and hope they put their hand in their pockets to help to pay for the restoration.

    Hello,
My private mail to Mr Goodman owner of the above coaches,he stated that they are inline to be restored.
I do not know how correct his answer is.
They are not beyond hope yet.

Ah okay, wasn't entirely sure. I'd agree that lner coaches stick out as special, but how about, say, the lms set on the svr compares to maroon mk1s or bulleids with green mk1s for instance?

    Talking of that railcar...
Back in the late eighties I posted a letter to the KESR regarding the RC and asked if I could come and a look see.
Lovely reply of NO! And what was the motive behind my request?....
Have had no interest in the vehicle since and the Railway.

offer them a couple of mk1s and they would take your hand off:) once they get to Robertsbridge they will need every coach they can get out, i find that reply strange because, every time we had someone ask us about the railcar, we always took the time to show them round it, if it was posible, you probably asked the wrong person, very often the office will say no,when a request to the department gets a more measured reply, depending on who you ask ;) but that the situation now, back in the 80's i dont know who was in charge
