Pair of ‘Wrens’ for Apedale gala

    The Moseley Railway Trust has announced a pair of Kerr Stuart ‘Wren’ 0-4-0STs for the Apedale Valley Light Railway’s Stanhope Steam Gala on May 13/14.

    The first is Statfold Barn Railway-based No. 3128 ‘Roger’, a locomotive that has crossed the Atlantic four times.

    Built in 1918, it was exported for preservation in Canada in 1959, returning to the UK in 2013 for restoration to working order. Although the locomotive returned to Canada, it was not permitted to run there and was repatriated to the UK in September last year (see SR459). The gala will be the first time No. 3128 has operated away from its Statfold home.

    The second ‘Wren’ is new-build No. 3905 Jennie, built in 2005 by the successor to the old Kerr Stuart company - Hunslet Engine Company - based at Statfold Barn. The 0-4-0ST is currently resident at the Amerton Railway and will be making its first visit to Apedale.

    Phil Robinson, Moseley Railway Trust Chairman said: “Having two ‘Wren’ class locomotives on site at Apedale will be really exciting. This is the design of locomotive which most people associate with Kerr Stuart. We think that having five Kerr Stuart-designed locomotives in operation is a record in preservation.

    “It will be fascinating to compare two locos which are very similar in design, yet are 87 years apart in age. This must surely be another record – the longest production run of a product design!”

    Two of the other previously announced locomotives are ‘Tatoo’ 0-4-2ST Stanhope and unique ‘Sidar’ 0-4-0T Diana (see separate story). Both locomotives are celebrating their centenary this year. Joining them will be AVLR resident Kerr Stuart ‘Joffre’ 0-6-0T No. 3014.
