ENGLISH Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) has opened a new coal train operation at Gascoigne Wood, the former UK Coal loading site near Selby, that will handle 20 additional coal trains a day in Yorkshire.

The Gascoigne Wood facility was planned to be launched in April next year, but EWS has brought this forward to December.

This will enable more coal to be delivered by rail to power stations at a time when demand for additional rail services to haul coal continues to increase, says EWS.

According to EWS, the site will enable better utilisation of coal wagons, increasing the number of trips per wagon per week, improve driver utilisation and reduce fuelling times.
