Now that 34092 and the S160 are complete, what are the next locos in line for overhaul at the Worth Valley?

Overhauls on Std 4 4-6-0 75078 and the Taff Vale tank are ongoing and the stripping down of Ivatt tank 41241 is being done.

  4. I have uploaded some pictures of 41241 and a superb model of am Ivatt tank from the Harrogate model engineering exhibition. The workmanship on the model is way beyond mere superb. See them on

Not a KWVR expert but from what I've read 75078 should be ready over the winter - hopefully before the Winter Gala in March. The boilers in place and it's almost looking like a proper engine again.

85 is moving on pretty well, there's an update (from last April) below...

    http://news.kwvr.co.uk/2014/04/22/taff-vale-railway-o2-class-0-6-2t-no-85-restoration-update/

From what I read it sounds like they are working on the firebox (or have been recently) which is the last job it needs doing before she's put back together.

45596 is due to come back in 2017 along with 41241 before the 50th Anniversary in 2018 (touch wood). This is being slowly stripped down for overhaul.

752 is steady away - I think this is due to a limited workforce available.

78022 is back at Haworth which should see some work started once 75078 and 85 are back in action.

It's like travelling back into the 90's. :)

These things have a habit of coming in cycles though for example at the SVR 2857,43106,7812 and 4566 are in traffic all stalwarts from the mid/late 1980's to mid '90s and 34027 & 75069 to return. Looking forward to 75069's return, what chance of a meeting with 75078?

    Was at the gala today and had a tour round the shed and saw the following;

75078- Looks like a Standard 4 again- 'probably a couple of months work'

85- Boiler on a wagon in the front of the works, chassis virtually complete and sheeted up at the back of the shed

41241- Chassis partially stripped, boiler off and ready to go away to be repaired- requires extensive repairs to the firebox

78022- sat at the back of the workshop ready to begin work on when 75078 is out

752- frames and saddletank sat out the back of the shed looking very sorry for themselves.

I had a bit of a poke about 48431 in the engine house- looks pretty rough especially the tender- was trying to work out if the USA Tank has been converted for oil firing at some point too- it has the same firehole door as the austerity in front of it which I believe was.

The 8F tender was stored outside at Oakworth for a while while 48431 was running - guessing from memory broken springs? The 8F used the 4F tender for a few years towards the end of it's time in use.

Very much doubt the USA tank will run again - think it needs a new firebox - and they don't come cheap - even on ebay.

I'd expect the USA to have a steel firebox, so not too expensive - I would hold out some hope for it eventually.

Oil fired for a period in the 70s, I believe, but back to coal fired when it returned to traffic in the 80s.

Also had a shed tour at Howarth yesterday - am I correct in thinking that No. 752 was the partially dismantled saddle tank stored between the shed and the DMUs? Was good to see 75078 and 85 looking so close to completion, and I would guess that they should both be in traffic relatively soon. Rather surprised that 41241 is being overhauled given the huge amount of money it's going to cost. I appreciate that the engine has a lot of emotional value for the KWVR with the 50th anniversary coming up, but I hope this doesn't cause any financial difficulties. BTW the chap who does the shed tours is excellent, and it would be great to see that type of thing at more railways.

You could always buy a whole loco from Bosnia.. £10k+shipping wasn't it last time they were up for sale ? - and they were in working condition.

I think Id rather chance it with 30072! Those overseas look a tad rough!

Yes 752 is the partially dismantled loco sat there so I was told- apparently there has not been an awful lot of progress on it.

I apologise, perhaps a better expression would be they look a bit unloved.

Yea, didn't think about that one - doesn't get a lot of press really, last I heard was it was being taken apart to see how much work it needed doing - but you're right - they do seem to be working on it. That and the BLS 50t crane.
