Within the York Area group wagon fleet on the NYMR we have an ex GWR MACAW numbered as DW103310.
Following advice received from here on the forum I have located a number stamped into the underframe of 107177.

(Number just visible below the sheet hook and the DO lettering)

    My queries are:
To what variety of wagon was this originally applied to?

When was the number likely to have been changed and why?

And the last one that I have asked before and no one has come up with an answer yet.
How come this wagon ended up at BREL York as a Crane Runner?

    Hi Bryan
This is interesting. I have 107177 as a crane runner, ex Bogie Bolster A "Macaw H". This was an ex internal user at Derby Litchurch Lane & renumbered 024431. This was supposedly scrapped in 1990. Perhaps it moved to York instead and sold to NYMR from there. Was it purchased after 1990?
I tried to find out about your 103310 in the past and there doesn't seem to be any Bolster's in this range, so could this be a fictitious number? However a similar wagon 103349 is at Cambrian and I can't find diagram details for this either but managed to find details for all other GWR Bolsters.
    Cheers
    Steve

The wagon was purchased from BREL York and was delivered to the NYMR in April 1991.
    No other allocation history known

One of our group has found this bit of info:-
I looked at the GWR Special Wagons Diagram book which shows:-

Macaw "B" wagon was built in the number series 103301 - 103400

However No. 107177 (which is stamped on the underframe) is in the series
    1071 01 - 107285 which are Macaw "H"

    So what is the difference:-

Macaw "B" 48' over buffers carrying capacity 30 tons.
Macaw "H" 38' over buffers carrying capacity 20 tons.

The numbers were a bit intermixed:-

    103301 - 103400 "B"
    107002 - 107100 "B"
    107101 - 107285 "H"
    107286 - 107309 "B"
    107310 - 107400 "H"

The "H" is shorter and the only noticeable difference I know. 103349 at Cambrian does look like the longer type so this I/d does tie in with the "B" type. It doesn't explain why your one carries 103310. I'm assuming yours is the 38' type as 101177 would suggest?
Is it possible it arrived at the NYMR with no I/d and 103310 was fictitiously applied? If it is the ex Internal from Derby it may have carried 024431 when it first arrived.

Ok Bryan some further digging with help from others.

024431 was listed as ex YSV DW107177 allocated to Derby Loco No.1 Shop on 7/5/1981 as an internal user. This was "assumed" scrapped in 3/90.
However at York was a crane DE2524 (plated 17405) with crane match wagon DE320963. By 9/3/90 this match wagon had been replaced with DW103310, which we know is really 107177. Both this & the crane was acquired by the NYMR in 4/91.
My conclusion, bearing in mind that 103310 is really 107177 (rubbed down frame clearly shows this) is that at some point from leaving Derby and arriving at York it was renumbered. Why I have no idea, especially as it was originally in the number range for the longer Macaw B's.
This is as much as I can find out.
    Cheers
