I've had a look at Zenfolio for now - it seems better than Flickr. With Flickr you don't seem to be able to personalise as much as you could with fotopic. The quality of Zenfolio is much higher than fotopic ever was IMO.

Having set up a small gallery on Flickr , it's easy to use and you can add more information

I don't think it looks very professional , but having learned from the fotopic experience there is maybe a case of spreading my output over more than one web host

I've been looking at Zenfolio this morning and have to say I'm impressed. I'm just wishing I'd found it before to be honest.

I've only been playing with it for a short while but here are the results so far.

Ive had a go at Smugmug, moonfruit and also designing one from scratch using iweb from the Mac, but i have to say i think Zenfolio is coming out on top for me at the moment. It seems very flexible.

    A small selection at http://philmetcalfe.zenfolio.com/

    Any comments are welcome.
    Regards
    Phil

Well, I've got a BT Internet e-mail account, but I can't see anywhere that it includes a free Flickr Pro account!

Got no complaints about Zenfolio!! They even send an advance warning of any Maintenance work going to happen 2 days before its carried out!! Thats more that fotopic ever did. Due to do work on servers on Sat! So be warned if your thinking of joining them! Leave it until Sunday!

Just added a shot of 70000 ( poor light) http://rickeborall.zenfolio.com/p625634196

Apparently they weren't expecting to go live before June (according to them on Facebook), but due to the rapidly growing interest in Pikfu they're pushing hard to start as soon as possible and you can send your email address to them via http://www.Pikfu.com to become a beta tester. There is an example gallery at http://photos.jml.net/ so you can see what it's going to be like. Personally, I can't wait for it to go live as it looks good.

I was in the same position, but yes it's true if you have a BT broadband account. The secret is to set-up your primary email on Flickr using your BTinternet email address, then Flickr will upgrade you automatically (look for the 'Pro' against your Flickr photostream title). Sounds easy but it took me quite a while, and it also means that I have to log out of my regular Yahoo email to sign-in to Flickr using the BT email address. If you have any problems, I'd be happy to help further.

Having lived with Flickr for the best part of a week, I'm quite comfortable with what it offers but still a little wary of turning on some of the functionality. Spend a few minutes to take a look at my Flickr site. Best Wishes

Thanks Garry. It took me a while to work it out, but I got there in the end. I, too, am now a 'Pro'!

So, now that I've got the space, all I've got to do now is upload the 8,000 or so pictures that I had, or even still have, on you know who...

I`ve decided to go down the dedicated website route and now set up a site using coppermine, with webspace and a domain. It took my son less than an hour to buy the server webspace, get a domain name, set it up and get it running. So far ive upload 5 galleries to it with more going on every day and pictures need comments adding also.

    Check out http://www.steamingnorth.com/

    1) Click on a collection on the opening page -
    2) this opens up to a page of thumbnails. Choose a thumbnail which opens to a filmstrip of pictures plus a intermediate of the chosen thumbnail.
    3) Double click internediate for a near screen size picture in new window
    4) enjoy !!

Im looking for a better theme for the front page at present - but this will do for the time being.

Anyone who is thinking of using similar and would like to give it a spin first before going down this route please pm me- Ive still got one running on a little webspace elsewhere at
http://www.jamesarobinson.co.uk/dad/cpg15x/ and I will send you login & password details for you to play with before it gets deleted next week. ( dont upload too much as space is short! room for another 20 pics- but you can see what it does, checkout quality, change themes etc create collections - file size is set to below 2meg picture size uploads - I usually upload at about 1/4 of this)

    John

Well, we're all going our separate ways, it seems. I've uploaded my early Festiniog Railway pictures from 1960 to 1962 onto Flickr. I started my Fotopic site with some of these, so it seemed appropriate, somehow. Anyway, if anyone's interested, you'll find 'em here :

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/40052043@N03/sets/72157626169246219/

When you click on a thumbnail in Flickr you get a medium sized picture. If you then hit the 'L' on the keyboard it comes up with a black background and you can then enlarge it again with the 'view all sizes' button at the top right of the picture.

    Jolly clever stuff!

    Hi folks,

Having got a few splinters in my rear end from sitting on the fence since the disappearance of fotopic I have just about taken the plunge! I have a free trial of Smugmug on the go at the moment and have started off with a few recent events that I have been to since the fotopic days. They can be found here http://paulgildersleve.smugmug.com/
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who may have some comments on the site.

    Thanks,

    Paul

I have regrouped on flikr (as another with BT Broadband, though I liked Zenfolo it was silly to spend money as we had thisl) where you will find Welsh Highland Half Term trains, featuring Lyd here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/owenchapman/sets/72157626195184503/

    A spectacular charter with K1 here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/owenchapman/sets/72157626321040552/

and an other the following day with ME here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/owenchapman/sets/72157626324029060/

There are also a few of FR and WHR interest in my Faviourt shot of 2010 set here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/owenchapman/sets/72157626321141902/

I wont be uploading all that lost on Fotopic, but will add new as they occur
