I think it's more a case of balance on the centre, if it's an uneven distribution, it will be hard, if not impossible to turn.

A good historical example is the Garsdale turntable incident.. Perfectly balanced, the locomotive span round out of control in one stormy night.

In a word, no! If you can balance the loco on the table, there will be little load on the perimeter rail and it will be relatively easy to turn. However, the centre of gravity of a loco isn't conveniently at its mid point so, if the loco is nearly as long as the table, it is unlikely to be in balance and some load will be on the perimeter rail. This will make it hard to turn and advantageous to have it motorised by whatever means. The load on the rail will, however, never be as great as when the loco is running onto the table.

When running onto the table, drivers used to sense the point when the table just tipped slightly, indicating that it was in balance.

Pictures and updates. The west side of the shed has been cleared of vegetation. A small piece of track has been laid, and will in time be extended. The eagle eyed among you will see the buffer stop is ex Guild st. Work inside the shed is progressing to, with preparations on repairing some of the rotten beams well under way.

    Anyway, here are some pictures.

    First section of new track.

West side of the shed now clear. The coaling stage is off to the left.

View of the east side, with the mainline directly behind us.

Finally a couple of shots of two of the main yard sidings, with the buffer of the coaling stage clearly visible up to the left of the photograph.

The news page at http://frht.org.uk/ says they now have all the funding they need to restore the turntable. Maybe there will be somewhere for 60009 to turn when (if) she returns to Aberdeen next year?? Fingers crossed...

With the RYTC Great Britain advertising a day trip to Aberdeen in April 2019, is the suggesting the turntable could be available by then?

I havnt heard anything about that, the facebook page is very quiet.

One very sad piece of news was that one of the trusteed died, David Clucas. That is a great loss to the trust.

I did see that vegetation has been cleared from the head-shunt in to the yard tho...so maybe moves are afoot.
