Not seen much about this one, anyone else on it apart from me? We're boarding at Sheffield, which looks like a good choice beng as it is currently timed to take 3 hours from Sheff to Manc on the way back! Anyone know why this is, and what the loco is likely to be on the day?

Last year's trip changed quite a bit see UK Steam 30/5/15, due to pathing issues on the return, and a change of pick-up points. The details on the website look similar to those last year before the changes.

Just looked at booking on this for me and my dad because of a change of plan, but seems standard class is sold out! Good news for the tour though :) May look at the coast to coast a month later instead

Any update on this? I'm likely to be in York on that day (coming from Manchester) so it'd be nice to time my arrival/depature to see it.

Thanks for the heads-up. Very disappointed at losing the East Yorks routing - never travelled that way, but the rest of our party will take the extra hour in Scabby. Unlike the 50 mins in Milford Loop, which will go down like a lead balloon. Why do I bother?

So why's the route changed - gauging? What's the motive power? Likelihood of a box on the back?

Steam came off at Milford last year see http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t15/t0530b.htm. Last year we had a diesel on the back.
At least it picking up and dropping off at Sheffield this year, it was Mexborough on the way out and Woodlesford on the return last year.

That's where we are boarding, after a crack of dawn start in the Midlands. I'll no doubt get it in the neck from the 6 'norms' in our party for the adverse changes to the itinerary.

Last year with Leander we have a box on the back to assist up Miles Platting, and to take the return from Milford. Pathing was a problem last year.

Was tempted by this trip a while back, but finances were (and are until the end of the month) grim- so no real sense of loss. The loss of steam at Milford (if that is indeed what's going on) is intriguing, but if its happened before, then its happened before. Overall, the mileage covered has seen pretty regular steam in the past 18 months, and apart from a fairly uncommon steam foray over Hazel Grove chord, the most interesting bit of track between Romiley and Ashburys is by DL- steam was on that section for the first time since the '60s last November. A shame, and not sure whether this is a foretaste of things to come regarding the Liverpool-Scarborough trip in July.

For those on it, there is the consolation of Armed Forces Day in Scarborough, so at least there's something to see whilst there, but it will be busy.

The timings back, given a lot of it will be by diesel, are particularly disappointing. This was a rare opportunity for an interesting looking trip in this somewhat more straightened year of steam tours so it does seem like a bit of a shame.

Last year they were unable to path the train back via the Hope Valley diesel hauled.

The Brid line has been lost due to Route Availability - it is RA6 and 'Leander' is RA7. Dispensation can be granted by the relevant structures engineers (as last year) but on this occasion they have declined.

The re-routing around Manchester is because 5Xs now have a prohibit through Marple (don't even ask, as I was on 'Galatea' in February and we passed without incident!).

Finally, steam was always planned to be detached at Milford.

Really helpful info. Thanks. At times it must feel as though our rigid and unyielding railway infrastructure must flex with the whim of the engineers and their computer systems, plus the weather. Well actually, it does with the latter!

    Thanks James.

Just had another read of RTC's site - still showing routing via Beverley, but loco as Leander, and steam off at Milford Loop. I asked them about the change of route and steam off at Milford. They thought route was down to gauging, but no explanation for steam off at Milford. I'm pretty sure there was no mention of that originally when we booked months ago , but I could be wrong.

Out of interest, what's the RA of a Brit?

I think its RA7. Its been a while since 70013 went up. My guess is one of two scenarios:

    1. A weight restriction has got more severe.
    2. NR can't be bothered to assess for special dispensation.
