Don't Panic! Unexploded shell scare shuts down West Somerset

    The discovery of a wartime relic near Watchet station forced the West Somerset Railway to suspend its services on May 18.

    WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare said: “A member of our permanent way team discovered the object beside the line during a routine check. The emergency services were called, and we suspended our train services."

    Trains began running again once an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit had removed the item, believed to be a Second World War anti-aircraft shell.

    Mr Conibeare went on to say: “I am immensely proud of all of our staff, and I thank them all for their quick actions and professionalism in ensuring the safety of our passengers.”
