On the lower part of side of the body of the vacuum relief valve below the actual internal relief valve itself is a loose 1/2" diameter ball retained there by a strap held on with two screws. When loose, this will permit air to enter the system.

What is the exact function of this ball?

Surprised that no one else has responded on this one. As I understand it, it is to allow any moisture to escape. It is drawn onto its seat when vacuum is created.

Sounds sensible. I've ploughed through all the literature I have on vacuum brakes and found nothing on this particular item. Thanks for the info.
