Bulleid boiler at Buckfastleigh

    The boiler from ‘West Country’ class No. 34026 Eddystone has arrived at Buckfastleigh on the South Devon Railway for overhaul.

    Arriving at the SDR’s engineering works on August 4, the boiler from the Bulleid-designed ‘Pacific’ joins two others already under overhaul at the railway: No. 34059 Sir Archibald Sinclair and No. 34101 Hartland.

    SDR Press & PR Manager, Dick Wood, explains: “Several Bulleid owning groups have got together to commission work on their respective boilers in order to gain economies of scale.”

    Eddystone is in line for a fast track overhaul, as owning group Southern Locomotives Limited intends to have No. 34028 back in service in 2018 to replace ‘Battle of Britain’ No. 34070 Manston at the Swanage Railway when the locomotive is withdrawn for its ten-year overhaul.

    Originally, SLL had planned to restore ex-Barry ‘West Country’ No. 34010 Sidmouth using Eddystone’s boiler, but the restoration of Sidmouth will now happen concurrently with No. 34028’s overhaul.
