    All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – January 1963

    Diesel and Electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops with Doncaster building class 85 electrics, Derby building class 25 and class 46 “Peaks” and class 52 Westerns being built at Crewe and Swindon. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Beyer Peacock at Manchester were building class 35 Hymek’s and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.

    After the massive attack on the steam fleet in December 1962 when 623 locomotives were withdrawn January 1963 was relatively quite with only 74 withdrawals spread over 36 classes.

    Also for the first time in many years there were no new diesel shunters delivered during the month. This was due to the fact that the last British Railways order for diesel shunters had been completed in December 1962 with the delivery of D4157 from Horwich works. This would be the high point for the diesel shunter fleet as within the few years the changing traffic patterns and reduction in route mileage would see the steady reduction of the fleet.

    After the massive attack on the steam fleet at the end of 1962 and the quite early months of 1963 steam withdrawal started to pick up again with 101 withdrawals in the month of March. One of those withdrawals escaped being broken up and can be seen in this collection.

    Steam withdrawals slowed down again in April 1963 perhaps because of the unusually hard winter months that had just past which the new diesel fleet had found tough and whose reliability had suffered accordingly. Of the 77 steam withdrawals in the month it was the LNER Pacific’s which stand out with another three A4’s (60013/15/22), three A3’s and an A1 withdrawn. One of the A4’s withdrawn was of course the world record speed holder for steam locomotives 60022 Mallard, which naturally escaped being broken up.

    Steam withdrawals accelerated again in May 1963. Of the 112 steam withdrawals spread over 41 different classes the most notable were 20 Austerity 2-8-0’s. At least one of the May withdrawals escaped being broken up, Hall class 4-6-0 4953 Pitchford Hall.

At least one of the June withdrawals escaped being broken up, Robinson class 02, 2-8-0 63601.

    John, you have some good photo records here and excellent write ups beneath each...very useful. I'm contemplating spending time on doing the same sort of thing in getting a load of 60's photos loaded; many are in negative form and slides without actual photos. What scanner or device do you use and what sort of time does it all take you I wonder. Can you actually view a result before loading to computer... Any advice much appreciated....Pete

    The overwhelming majority of non digital 1970/80 photographs on the site are from 35mm transparencies and have been scanned using an Epsom 4490 scanner. I bought this at the end of 2007 so it is in IT terms ancient. It cost me then around £140 and is designed in addition to normal scans to scan both transparencies and negatives. It takes me around 5-30 minutes for each scan as I tidy them up on the computor by using photoshop to get the best result and remove the odd blemishes etc that have developed over the thirty odd years of storage. The length of time is dependant on the quality of the original transparency.
    When I first started (originally with Fotopic) in 2007 a viewer advised me to add captions as a way of improving the site and making it more than just another photo site. As far as I am concerned that proved excellent advise and I get as much enjoyment at researching the captions as from the photo’s themselves. The information comes from a number of sources:
    i. my memory
    ii. my old spotting note books from 1969 - 1974 which I have retrieved from the loft.
    iii. My old locoshed books from the 1970's and 1980's again out of the loft
    iv. RCTS publications either from the loft or from e-bay
    v. and finally the internet.
    Again captions can take anything from a few minutes to an hour depending usually depending on the subject.
    Up until 2007 I had not looked at them for over twenty years and an interesting aside is that most of the photos I can still remember standing there and taking. However every now and then I come across a few that I can not remember taking at all.
    My site gives me great pleasure, reminds me of my younger days and has introduced me to a number of new people who I now correspond with.

    Thanks for that John, much appreciated. What you say about remembering clearly taking most of the photos, really could be me speaking ! If only remembering things that happened yesterday was so easy and in fact the most annoying thing for my son and daughter is when I say, I can't find my glasses !!! They're better off in their own houses eh. lol. Anyway, you've certainly put in a massive amount of hours to get the results, and I'm sure you're rightly proud. I just don't know if I could be so diligent but perhaps its a job more appropriate for Autumn/Winter. I will give it a go and hopefully it will alleviate the piles of negs and slides which never get looked at. I used a Zenith in the early 60's so hopefully their will be SOME worthwhile results, although I certainly didn't take as many as your records show.
    In the meantime I'll do a bit of research for an appropriate scanner....And I shall have some more peeps at your sites for some ideas. There must be millions of railway photos in lofts and cupboards across the country.
    I shall try to put a comment or two when I can...I do try to put one on some of the Tour updates as to 'my favourite photo of the days trip' and perhaps you won't mind if I do that. Beware a Duchess might get the nod !!!:p

The most notable were the first LNER designed British Railways built Peppercorn K1 class 2-6-0 62016 which had entered traffic in July 1949 and an attack on the large NER Raven 0-8-0 Q6 freight locomotives with 12 condemned. At least one of the July withdrawals escaped being broken up, Great Western 5600 class 2-6-0 5643.

Major inroads were made during the month on the larger passenger engines with another West Country and seven A3 Pacifics condemned and seven Castle, eight Hall, three County, nine Stanier Black Five, two Stanier Jubilee, one Fowler Patriot, four Royal Scots, six B16 and no less than twenty seven B1 4-6-0’s condemned and twelve V2 2-6-2’s also condemned. Another major inroad was made into the 2-8-0 freight engines with four Churchward 28xx, one Churchward 47xx, two Robinson 04, nine Austerities and no less than thirty Gresley 02’s condemned.

    After the all time monthly high of two hundred and thirty nine locomotives condemned in September there was a slight reduction during October, however a further one hundred and ninety six locomotives spread over fifty three classes were condemned in the month. Major inroads were again made during the month on the larger passenger engines with four Coranation, three A1, eight A3 and five A4 Pacifics condemned. Also five Castle, eleven Hall, two County, three Stanier Black Five, seven Stanier Jubilee, one Fowler Patriot, two Royal Scots and one B1 4-6-0’s condemned plus another V2 2-6-2’s also condemned. Another major inroad was made into the Fowler 4F 0-6-0’s and no less than thirty three condemned. Another sign that steam was in rapid decline was the condemnation of another British Railways Standard engine, class 2 2-6-2T 84012 which was only just over ten years old.

    Diesel and electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington andDerbybuilding class 25’s, Swindon and Crewe building class 52 Westerns andDoncasterbuilding class 85 electrics. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Clayton at Derby were building class 17’s and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.

    Following the all time monthly high of two hundred and thirty nine locomotives condemned in September withdrawals continued around the two hundred mark with two hundred and three locomotives spread over fifty three steam classes and one diesel class condemned in the month. Another British Railways Standard engine, class 2, 2-6-0 78015 was condemned in the month which was less than ten years old. From now on the steam fleet would not only be affected by the dieselization programme but the effects of the Beeching Report and the associated closures would also start to become apparent.

    With the continuing increase in diesel locomotives and the effects of the Beeching Report and the associated line closures December was another all time high for locomotives condemned with three hundred and seven being withdrawn in the month. This would take the number of withdrawn locomotives since the end of the 1963 Summer timetable (four months earlier) to nine hundred and forty five. Locomotives withdrawals in the month were spread over sixty three steam classes and two diesel classes. Major inroads were made in the month into the Great Western 0-6-0PT fleet with sixty locomotives condemned, the LMS Fowler 0-6-0 4F and the WD 2-8-0’s both having with twenty one locomotives condemned and the Great Western Hall 4-6-0’s with eighteen locomotives condemned. Four main line diesels were also condemned, the LMS prototype 10000 and the three Bullied diesels 10201 – 10203. At least three of the December withdrawals escaped being broken up, Great Western 14xx 0-4-2T 1466 (4866), Great Western Hall 4-6-0 4965 (4983) andGreatWesternCastle4-6-0 5029.
