The difference is that these aren't actually shares.

It isn't all that long ago Tyseley was publicly open to offers on 45593 IIRC to raise funds for higher priority projects. One of the panniers too was supposedly for sale.

I think one of the fundamentals about "Defiant" is that, according to my research, she only did 3 main line excursions as such. I believe she did a few Shakespeare's but only 3 actual main line outings and then spent most of the rest of her time on "Foot Ex" duties at Tyseley. Fantastic that she may get a chance to come out again and show what she can do. Quite surprised at some of the questions being raised about the way in which funds are to be raised. At the end of the day the funds must be raised to do the job and I imagine, if 5043 is anything to go by, it would be fantastic performer when complete. The poet in me imagines four Castle's one day steaming up at Tyseley - 5043, 5080, 7027, 7029...amazing

Why not dream big and add in 4079 and 5029 too, that might just be a match for six cold A4s around the table in the NRM :)

This is getting interesting! All those Castle's...That's why I've never understood the mentality of "you already have two" etc...its not really about that. 5080 has been silent for a while now... :)

It'll be good to see a greater representation by the GWR on the mainline as well with 7027 4079 5029 5080 6024 and 6023 all on there way now by the looks of things

Tyseley will have a business plan that they are happy can sustain a fleet of working locomotives . Also since the engines are operated only by themselves and under a very good maintenance regime the likelyhood is that the engine will do not only a ten year ticket but probably a second one too with comparatively low overhaul cost

Not being rich I wouldn't know, but the permanent association bit that share ownership brings appeals to me, but, for example, having my name engraved on a plaque with a list of donors doesn't appeal at all. As we all think differently, it makes sense that different locomotives are financed in subtly different ways.

Interesting proposal, I have to confess I always assumed that 5080 would be off the main line for a long time as they have 5043 and 7029. I assume that 5043's ticket must expire reasonably shortly, I haven't seen any stories but will she just bow out for a period whilst 7029 runs, do they have a need or the work for two on the main line simultaneously?

Likewise I fear we shall not see 5051 again in my lifetime as Didcot now have a King and shortly a Castle to play with on the mainline?

Don't forget 4965, 4936 (soon to begin an overhaul back to main line condition) and the panniers! They may not be 75mph-registered express locos but they are still GWR engines.

Great Western Castle Class are among those locomotives that keep me excited about steam on the mainline. Whenever I watch videos of 5043 I never get tired. There is so much excitement there in my eyes.

Well, Mike, you;ve got 10 days to go before its next outing http://www.vintagetrains.co.uk/cotswold8oct2016/ and I would be very surprised if no one turns up to record the climb of Sapperton for our enjoyment.
