The boiler was hydrauliced to 270psi last weekend successfully by the ESR team. A few minor leaks were corrected. It is hoped to warm it through and raise steam over the next couple of weekends with a view to presenting it to the inspector shortly thereafter. The new smokebox was riveted a couple of weeks ago. Assuming all goes to plan, it should be craned back into the frames during April.

Great progress on the Ivatt guys!

Back on the IOW most of April will be run with terriers, including quite a few red timetable days where both trains will be terrier hauled! Check website for details

Hi, its one train in steam on those days, best thing would be to phone in advance. If it isn't then you would get 41298.

thats very fast work, when 41313 is completed will she be ran in at the ESR first before being shipped over to the island ? , are any visits planned to any other railways before she does head back to Havenstreet, prehaps a visit to Swanage or Midhants be a good opertunity to try to get 41312 and 41313 together. whilst enroute to Portsmouth

41313 will be ran in on the ESR, I believe it will head straight back to the IOWSR once it has had the set number of steamings at Cranmore.

Thanks for the reply, i was thinking that as 41313 won't be needed at Havenstreet straight away as they have 24 and 41298 available it might be an opertunity for the IOWSR to earn some hiring fees, as the engine will have to be transported from Cranmore anyway that an one time only chance to visit Swanage then Ropley en route may attract extra earnings, plus as once returned to the island, its very unlikily that 41313 will be making any trips back to the mainlind for a while, i'm assuming that somethhing special will be done by the ESR, when the engine enters traffic , with both ivatts working, so on the back of this additional chances to see 41313 working for say 1 week end at Swanage, then a final weekend aloong with 41312 on the MHR, as a farewell to the mainland , and as a welcome to the island a ivatt week end at havenstreet with both ivatts working all trains ?

There will be a launch event but as for visits to other lines that is for the IOWSR to decide, it would not surprise me if it doesn't as it may dilute the impact of it returning to the Isle of Wight if a lot of people have seen it paired with another Ivatt.

Oh dear! This thread, supposedly about the overhaul of 41313 is getting far too W.I.B.N. It is a modern, economical to run, machine, with labour saving features that is being done up to earn its keep on the railway that owns it. There it will reduce the demands made on a fleet whose members are up to 141 years old.

    Hi Paul,

I think you have rather over stepped the mark in your last post.

There is absolutely no need for the loco on the IOWSR for the foreseeable future. I dont know why W24 Calbourne is currently unavailable, but the 2 Terriers and Calbourne will always be a big crowd puller. 41313 will require the sort of lengthy sorting out with the braking systems that beset 41298 if and when it returns to the Isle of Wight.

In theory by boiler ticket dates the IOWSR has an abundance of available excellently well maintained locos for quite a few years without the addition of 41313 to cover all duties.

I must also comment on the excellent work done by the team at the ESR and excellent progress.

    Cheers,
    Julian

Well, W11 recently had to be stopped to rectify a hot axlebox. W24 is having attention to valves and pistons which was expected but has a regulator problem which was not. These are the sorts of uncertainties to be expected with ancient machinery.

IMHO any steam railway has to give priority to serving its core business which is not I fear providing photo opportunities for enthusiasts although these do get looked after if possible

Just to add a bit of context to the discussion of the future employment of 41313 (and 41298) here is an extract from the IWSR Strategic Vision document, stating the medium term objectives for provision of motive power (the short term objective is to have enough locomotives available to run the service!)

Medium-term – The two Ivatt tank locomotives will join the two or more ‘Austerities’ as our main workhorses. Class E1 No.2 Yarmouth will be restored to operational condition. We wish to have one of the ‘Terriers’ fitted and operational for push-pull working.

There is also an informative discussion on the pros and cons of locomotive hire here.
