£12,000 Northampton & Lamport shed appeal

Discussion in 'Steam Railway' started by Thomas Bright, Oct 5, 2017.

Steam locomotives will no longer be stored in the open at the Northampton & Lamport Railway, as the 1½ mile line has launched a £12,000 appeal to build its first ever engine shed.

NLR Operations Director, Adam Giles, says: “Ever since the NLR started running trains in 1996, we've had to store our engines outside with the associated deterioration and security issues. The time has now come where we need to construct undercover secure storage.

“We are therefore launching an appeal to raise £12,000 to make this necessity a reality. We have received a very competitive quote for the steel frame and would like to have construction well underway for the winter.”

The single road 65ft shed will enable two small locomotives to be stored under cover and will incorporate some of the windows recovered from the Bedford (Midland) shed. The design will also allow for subsequent expansion “as and when finances allow”.

People can donate either via the railway's website – www.nlr.org.uk – or by sending a cheque payable to Northampton Steam Railway Ltd, with the envelope marked 'Shed Fund'.

The news comes off the back of the railway's recent successful 'Branch Line Weekend' gala on August 26-28, starring '14XX' No. 1450 (see SR471).

Mr Giles said: “We have received very positive feedback from all the volunteers and visitors for the weekend and will definitely be hosting a 2018 event.

“What loco for next year? Well, you will have to wait and see, maybe something in keeping with the line or maybe another visitor from across the border of the LMS. We are also looking at the possibility of a photo charter one evening.”
