Correlation is not necessarily an indicator of causation.....
None of the events to which you allude were attributable to design flaws, unless I am mistaken?

There were two adverse events involving not just the same type but the same locomotive. One of those was due to the fitting of an inappropriate replacement part. The other had some contributory factors but was mainly due to an operator over-riding a protective system, which was easier to do than it should have been because of the particular way in which that system had been installed. Any other events with the same type of loco? Any reason why more adverse events in future should be any more likely with that type than with any other?

Quite so. Not sure what @1472 was implying really but it seemed to be more Bulleids would cause more incidents - facile to say the least.

That post must go down as one of the most bizarre comments of the year... so far.

With my Clan Hat on would be interested to get the full story on the identified problem/solutions employed here as would those involved with 70013, 71000 etc

No doubt, at the next BRSLOG meeting in April, the representative for 70000 will give a full report on the work carried out on the loco.

The Cecil J Allen book on British Pacific Locomotives has a very good section on Britannia defects (pp202-205). There were several teething problems with the class and also operating issues such as loco crews on the Western Region not coasting with a little steam running through the cylinders, presumably because that was the practice with their own locos. As a class, I think their history and defects are well documented.

Good thinkin' Std, I will drop 'CJ' a line.
Thanks Al, will look out for that but between Atkins, Cox, Bond,Hardy and Langridge I think I might have it covered problems wise - its the ' contemporary' diagnosis and solutions aspect which is perhaps of the greater interest...

Don't recall that Bulleid or Jarvis could be judged to be accountable on either score.
Our sector isn't logical - if it was there would be more Class 8's and fewer Class 5's on the network

Having read the description of the work undertaken, I wonder if some of the issues with Britannia relate to the bearings and how long it has stood still over the past few years at Crewe, Ropley etc. This type of bearing will form a flat spot if left for too long which will of course cause vibration that may only be apparent at high speed.

Can it bee read somewhere what happened and why?
My future 100 mph mainline- able steam design shall not repeat known failure modes.
It will generate a lot of yet unknowns of its own.

I have read in more than one place that the balancing of wheel sets once the roller bearings were in place was always tricky. It looks as though quite a lot of attention has been given to this in the overhaul. We all know how easy it is for a minor irregularity on a wheel of a car to upset the way that it behaves and not necessarily at every speed. So I think you guess may be close. It's good to see that logical remedial work is being done.

Exactly. To try and pin it on a type of locomotive is imbecilic.
