Indeed. A very pronounced back and forth transmitted from the steamer. Slightly surprising when going north with the diesel leading.

Looks as though the Severn Valley have given up hope of ever receiving a boiler to fit to these frames.

Following on from last weeks update on groups I managed to miss chatting with both the Ashover light railway gang and Mr Briddon who were busy in their respective sheds beavering away at things, to remedy that here's the link to Mr Briddon's weekend rails page, he tells me more good progress was made on RS8 engine, the ex Dinting railway centre yellow beast of my childhood Here's the link.

    https://www.weekendrails.co.uk/latest-posts/388.html

I see from my Facebook that the Ashover gang has been busy removing the second ex Duxford coaches bodywork,so they can restore the framework prior to rebuilding, when I next get down il try and get some pics if I can, they have also started to put up some extra storage space for stock as well as some painting and shed work too.

On my own side Andrew and Myself had a late evening midweek to replace the lamp case on Darley Dales down distant signal with one of the adapted led units,we also managed to locate a damaged cable joint under all the leaves in total darkness, which was lucky and made a temporary fix on that till next weekend, lastly I've had the chance to talk about the department at Kidderminster at the weekends Institute of Railway Signal Engineers biannual meeting of heritage and minor railways S&T .

WHITE PEAK LOOP - LATEST NEWS
Rail Crossing near Arc Leisure Centre, Matlock

Derbyshire County Council (DCC) has an unopposed order to divert the existing sub-standard public footpath opposite the Arc Leisure Centre onto the level crossing that is currently closed off. DCC is free to confirm the order once the works to upgrade the new crossing are complete. The works are to be carried out in January 2018 when Peak Rail is closed.

Cyclists will be able to use this crossing on a permissive basis, following an agreement between DCC and Peak Rail, whilst an alternative route for cyclists, is investigated, that does not involve a crossing on the rail tracks.

Update this time from other folks as haven't been down this week wth work and such, this time starting with the Ashover Light Railway volunteers who've been busy dismantling the old roof and wooden sides from the ex Duxford carriages, the steelwork has also been worked on with a view towards recreating the Ashover "Wembley" carriages which will require some work to the chassis ends, all time consuming but when done they will be a credit to those who've done a good job.

The photos come courtesy of the ALRS themselves.

I see the shed gang have been working on the eccentrics for wd150 as well as other bits, I should be down before Christmas so hopefully a bigger update next time.

    Stay warm folks.

Only news from my own side this time, except the LMSCA were busy in their shed finishing off the CCT (the van converted for use in restoring seating and trim etcetera)

    S and t

It's been a busy end to the year this week, Andrew John Ben and myself have spent a couple of days finishing replacing the bit of rotted timber on the leg of rowsley cabin, where water had got in round one of the bolt holes over its life, thanks to Andrew and Ben for sorting out the wood removal and its replacement.

We've also stripped down one of ex spare lner style ground signals to fit a better spindle and back weight to the Darley south yard one sometime in the new year once we've completed other jobs,

Ben has completed the original Midland blockshelf for the rowsley cabin and we trialed fitted it today and quickly discovered the old brackets are slightly different in length, so we spent some time replacing hem with another set that do match ,the brackets have been primed ready for the white gloss and Ben is also making some pieces up to bring the shelf up above the lever height as we don't want to catch anyone's fingers when the levers are operated,we've also got the finials to fit one day now that Bens made them up to.

We also managed to look at a couple of faults, the block bells have had their contacts cleaned and checked as were missing beats and also two track lights were illuminating at Darley which was a wire off behind the panel,so that's resolve red back on.

We also tried to swap over the cl14 spt but the new one didn't work,so it's a case of get the manuals out and find out why before replacing that again.

David has also been busy restoring the donated midland railway signal that will go back up on cl6 in the new year.

So lastly all I have to add is for you all to have a good and merry Christmas and il see you all in the new year, all the best to you and your families and have a happy new year too.

    Dom

Dom - I was interested to note that you were painting your block shelf brackets white. When I did the ones for St Albans South nearly 10 years ago, they were black and had always been so. Other examples I've seen have also been black. Any reason for yours being white?

Re block bell contacts - we clean ours about twice a year even though they are not used a great deal; we've also found the front contact can work loose a little after several years of use.

Season's greetings to you too - thanks for keeping us updated.

Good question that,I've always been used to white ones on our side of the hills, just kept it going as such, now you've got me interested though,it's only in primer so still needs its top coat gloss on,may do it in black as you say

Yes indeed bell contacts, occasional pains especially when they're rebuilt from second hand bits, the hammers back contacts always get a good hammering (pun intended)

Keep up the good work down in the southern Midlands I've still to get down to St Albans, will try very hard this year sir

    Happy New Year!

It never occurred to me the Harlequin may be closed on New Years Day. I learned by chance at the end of November and manually altered 650 printed programmes before distributing to the model shops and libraries, but approx 100 copies had already been taken at the Rob Foxon November Film Show.

COULD I PLEASE ASK YOU TO CHECK WITH YOUR PALS TO MAKE SURE THEY DON'T HAVE A WASTED JOURNEY ON MONDAY. THANKYOU.

Going to leave this link here for any interested parties to view https://www.peakrailaction.co.uk, a well organised and positive grassroots movement for change at the railway can only be a good thing in my view, change is the only way forward now, as things cannot go on with more of the same. I hope things will lead to a positive outcome and brighter future for the railway and its supporters.
