A warning for those intending to visit Swanage by public transport on 28th December.

There are engineering works between Southampton Central and Eastleigh/ Woolston or Fareham for renewal of Northam Jn. ( Unfortunately no diesel drags and diversions via Romsey like 1971 or 1982!) Revised timings are available on National Railway Enquiries and other enquiry web sites.

    Cheers, Neil

And the timetable is now up. See here.

As I type this, it's snowing outside and the prospect of a 260-mile round trip seems distinctly uninviting. One can't place too much store on the Met Office long range forecast, but if it is correct and we are heading for a cold but settled, dry (and hopefully sunny) spell in the week between Christmas and the New Year, then I'll be keen to come as this is a great line-up. If anyone knows whether any locos are likely to be turned between now and then, please let us know. 31806 currently faces Wareham and 41312 & 30120 currently face Swanage, I believe.

That correct John, the U is currently the only steam loco facing Wareham (if you discount Manston which may have gone by the warm up I am led to believe). Will post if anything gets turned.

Damn missed that move, and had not noticed it was no longer visible across the park. I assume that is why 33111 was parked opposite the viewing area this afternoon as I think it was blocking Manston in over the weekend.

Pass; I was down there for a meeting this morning, and it was taken up by D6515. Not sure what other moves took place during the day, as I had to be elsewhere.

Looks a very good lineup and worth the journey from Beds if the weather gods are kind.

Weather looking almost perfect for tomorrow, blue skies, just above freezing and little or no wind.

Very enjoyable day had today at Swanage. Shame about the lack of heating in one of the coach sets though! I soon switched to the train with working heating, which I was pleased to see included 4365 and 5761. I saw a couple of passengers who had just got off one of the MK1s in the train admiring the Bulleids as they walked past, and commenting that they must be the first class coaches. Also got my first ride behind the T9.

A very enjoyable day down at the Swanage. Perfect weather, enthusiastic crews and it was great to see and hear the T9 back out and about again. Thanks to everyone involved in the running of this superb event!

Although not billed as such, today has been a wonderful finale to the commemorative year marking 50 years since the end of Southern steam. It also has been a tremendous comeback for the Swanage Railway after the low point following the collision between Manston and the standard tank.

Thank you, one and all, for a really great day. I bought a T3 mug which will serve as a reminder of not only a good day but a good year in general for fans of Southern steam,

I picked up the 10:00 from Norden at Harmans.
The 10:00 ex Swanage certainly had no heating as no coach was exuding steam and the rear cock was dry.
I enjoyed a number of trips in the Bullied composite which had steam heat and even then it took a while for the ice to thaw on the inside of the glass.
It took me back to the quote from Pete Smith ex S&D passed fireman recalling the days when they had the motive power (9fs) for the job, but for a few pieces of bent pipe, passengers left the train blue from the cold as nobody in authority wanted to fit heating gear to freight locos.

Brilliant day, trains were busy and lots of photographers.

    Fake News Alert!!
Dorset Police are closing the road out of The Purbecks to heavy lorries for the foreseeable future. It means that the Ivatt will stay at Swanage indefinitely.

Re: lack of steam heat - I notice the steam heat flexible hose on S4983 is not coupled to 41312 (which I guess does have a working hose on the rear).
