when we surveyed the line, we reckoned about a third of the sleepers needed immediate replacement , now I 'd say it's all of them. Sad to think we had sourced the sleepers and would have paid for them and laid them...

Not the most encouraging situation, is it? Do I remember a comment about the ballast used to relay the T&B being that round stuff which gives the Bure Valley line such problems?

not heard that one. It would benefit from more ballast anyway to raise it more above the high tide line.

It always tickled me that, on the original line, there were special instructions to cover flooding, not for what to do when the tracks were submerged, but for when the waters reached the ash pan!

I note that IÉ have included flood mitigation measures for the southern end of the 'Western Rail Corridor' in their next tranche of improvements. Wonder if what works between Limerick and Ennis might provide some pointers for Tralee Basin, when the happy day finally dawns?

I suspect some "politicking" may be behind that. There are rumblings of discontent over the Dáil Éireann's inaction over any road freight reduction programme. With the shadow cast by Lemming Thursday, there are moves afoot to reroute freight to/from the EU direct from/to Irish ports. I believe Rosslare Europort is earmarked for some big time investment, but how Dublin Port or Port of Cork (also chasing investment) view matters is less clear. A lot of transport policy looks to be up in the air for the time being and from what I've seen, much in the media looks little better than ill-informed wishful guesswork. So nothing new there! My guess is that much of what's being bandied about is tied up with the wider political chess game.

    Hi Mícheál
A fine looking loco, glad to hear of progress.
Is the livery in the picture the one she will appear in when finished?

Not very trad there Felix .....surely just chuck on some dark battleship grey and number it 14L :D

Can't imagine Mr K would do less than turn out the well proportioned "Nancy" looking every bit as good as "Dromod" or the Keefe carriage. I'll admit to a soft spot for the little trolley I went up the line on, one summer's evening 18 years ago.

Does anyone know if there are detailed drawings anywhere of any of the locomotives that ran on the Cork and Muskerry railway? Especially the 4-4-0s?

Have the group decided what type of cab will be on the completed loco? Open or enclosed?
