All Our Yesterdays – 55 Years Ago –January 1962

Diesel and Electric locomotive building was in full swing (although slowed down somewhat in this period due to the Christmas holiday) with British Railways workshops at Darlington building class 10’s, Horwich building class 08’s and 09’s, Doncaster building class 85 electric locomotives, Derby building class 46 “Peaks” and Swindon building class 03’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 40’s and also English Electric were building at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 20’s. Beyer Peacock at Manchester were building class 35 Hymek’s and class 82 electric locomotives, Brush were building class 30’s (31’s) at Loughborough, North British Locomotive Co. at Glasgow were building, class 43’s and the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. were building class 27 and class 33’s.

In the month eighty eight steam locomotives were withdrawn with 1962 seeing a real start being made on the more modern designs. Whilst the odd post World War Two constructed locomotive had been condemned in the previous couple of years most notably GWR designed Hawkesworth 84xx 0-6-0 pannier tanks and LNER designed Class L1 2-6-4 tanks this month would see further 84xx and L1 tanks withdrawn along with LMS designed Ivatt 2-6-0’s and LNER designed B1 4-6-0’s.

In the month one hundred and twenty steam locomotives were withdrawn with 1962 seeing a real start being made on some of the more iconic designs as well as further inroads into the post World War Two constructed pre nationalisation designs of the GWR, LMS and LNER. Iconic classes to see their first condemnations were the GWR King class 4-6-0 (6006) and the LNER Gresley V2 class 2-6-0 (60850, 60960/77). This month would see further post war built GWR 16xx and 84xx pannier tanks and LNER B1 4-6-0’s and L1 tanks withdrawn.

The first electro-diesel (class 73) E6001 was on trials from Eastleigh on the 5th February 1962.

Locomotives Named

D225 Lusitania

Pilot scheme Peaks (class 44) D1-7/9/10 transferred to Toton for freight duties on which they would remain until withdrawal between 1976 and 1980.

Maintenance of the ten class 45 Peak locomotives currently allocated to Bristol Bath Road has temporarily transferred to Swindon Works with D34 arriving on the works at the beginning of March

Four Class 35 Hymek locomotives (D7022 – D7025) have arrived at Cardiff Canton MPD for crew training prior to taking over South Wales – Paddington express duties.

Class 21 NBL Type 2 D6127 caught fire on the 29th March 1962 at Greenloaning. The locomotive was badly damaged with little above the bogies/frame being undamaged.

In the month one hundred and twenty five steam locomotives were withdrawn with 1962 seeing a real start being made on some of the more iconic designs as well as further inroads into the post World War Two constructed pre nationalisation designs of the GWR, LMS and LNER. This month would see further post war built LMS Ivatt 2-6-0’s and LNER B1 4-6-0’s and J72 tanks withdrawn. Two GWR 45xx 2-6-2T 5521 and 5572 withdrawn this month escaped being broken up and are still in existence.

The North British Locomotive Co. went into liquidation on the 4th April 1962.

Class 21 NBL Type 2 D6127 badly fire damaged in March was stored and would never work again, however it was not officially withdrawn until December 1967 and broken up in April 1968.

Locomotives Named: D213 Andania, D216 Campania, D217 Carinthia, D219 Caronia

In the month steam locomotive withdrawals increased dramatically, up from one hundred and twenty five steam locomotives in April to one hundred and eighty two in May 1962. A major factor in this increase was the withdrawal of no less than forty five GWR 57xx pannier tanks in the month. The month would see a continuation of withdrawals from most of the remaining pre-nationalisation designs including a steady trickle of post World War Two constructed locomotives.

From the beginning of May the 08:10 St Pancras – Nottingham and the return 12:00 Nottingham – St Pancras have been rostered for a pair of recently delivered BRCW Type 2 locomotives (class 27).

Locomotives Named: D9000 Royal Scots Grey

In the month steam locomotive withdrawals remained steady at one hundred and eighty two in May 1962. This month would see the decimation of the London Midland and Scottish Railway, Stanier 3 cylinder 2-6-4 tanks with twenty eight out of a class of thirty seven condemned. Also heavily hit were the London Midland and Scottish Railway, Fowler “Patriot” 4-6-0 class with ten locomotives condemned and three relatively modern London North Eastern Railway, B1 4-6-0 class also were condemned. However the most notable steam withdrawals were the first of the Great Western Railway King class 4-6-0’s (6003/04/08/10/13/23/24) were withdrawn.

Gresley Pacifics commenced working the 3-hour Aberdeen – Glasgow Buchanan Street services with A4 60011 and A3’s 60087/90/94 all being noted.

Locomotives Named: D227 Parthia

In the month steam locomotive withdrawals declined slightly from one hundred and eighty two in June 1962 to one hundred and seventy two. The steady delivery of main line diesels and the decline of the Pre Grouping classes would see an increase in the number of the Post Grouping designed locomotives condemned. For example this month would see eleven London Midland and Scottish Railway, Stanier 2 cylinder 2-6-2 tanks condemned. However it was the Great Western Railway fleet that was really starting to pressure with twenty 4-6-0 engines (including another three Kings) and twenty nine 0-6-0 pannier tanks (three of which were less than ten years old) condemned At least one engine escaped being broken up, Great Western Railway Class 45xx 2-6-2T 4588.

Locomotives Named: D224 Lucania

In the month steam locomotive withdrawals declined from one hundred and seventy two in July 1962 to one hundred and forty four. The steady delivery of main line diesels and the decline of the Pre Grouping classes would see an increase in the number of the Post Grouping designed locomotives condemned. A sign of the future was the withdrawal of BR Standard 4MT 80103, the first of the BR Standards to be condemned. Another notable steam withdrawal was Southern Railway 4-6-0 30850 Lord Nelson, London and North Eastern Railway V2 60800 Green Arrow and J17 65567 which all eventually entered preservation:

Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 37’s, and class 40’s. The end of the 1962 summer timetable (on the 9th September) saw an unprecedented withdrawal of the steam fleet. In the month steam locomotive withdrawals increased from one hundred and forty four in August 1962 to five hundred and eight. Large withdrawals of 4-6-0 passenger steam engines including thirteen King class, three County class, twenty five Castle class, thirty four Hall class, two Lord Nelson class, five Patriot class and no less than fifty seven B1 class locomotives. Also withdrawn was one Princess class 4-6-2, nine V2 class 2-6-2’s, twenty one 43xx class and twenty nine K3 class 2-6-0’s engines. At least three of the withdrawals still survive, 4270, 69523 and 69621.

After last months unprecedented condemnation of five hundred and eight steam locomotives withdrawals in October decreased, however still numbered two hundred and sixty. Septembers heavy withdrawals of the large steam passenger classes continued in October with further withdrawals of 4-6-2, 4-6-0 and 2-6-2 engines including three County class, three Hall class, one Castle class, two Lord Nelson class, two Patriot class, six Jubilee class, two Royal Scot class, four Princess Royal class, five A3 class, two A1 class, eleven V2 class and seven B1 class. At least two of the withdrawals still survive, Stanier Pacifics 46201 Princess Elizebeth and 46203 Princess Margaret Rose.

Withdrawals in the month increased from locomotives two hundred and sixty to three hundred and twenty four. The Autumn withdrawals of the last three months now totalled almost eleven hundred locomotives. The steady flow of new Type 4 diesels was being reflected in heavy withdrawals in the large steam passenger classes which continued in November with further withdrawals of 4-6-2, 4-6-0 and 2-6-2 engines including one County class, three Hall class, four Castle class, two King class, one King Arthur, one Patriot class, five Jubilee class, three Royal Scot class, two Princess Royal class, four A1 class, six A2 class, four V2 class, thirteen B1 class and the first BR Standard to be condemned 71000 Duke of Gloucester.

The effect of the steady delivery of diesel locomotives through 1962 was really starting to be felt by the steam fleet when withdrawals increased from three hundred and twenty four in November 1962 to an unprecedented six hundred and twenty three steam locomotives condemned in December. Notable amongst the withdrawals were another eighteen LNER Pacifics including the first five Greasley A4’s 60003/14/28/30/33, twenty five LMS Royal Scot 4-6-0’s, thirteen LMS Jubilee 4-6-0’s and the remaining seventeen SR Schools 4-4-0’s. A start was also made on the LMS Stanier Black Fives with thirteen condemned but the most surprising withdrawals were the five BR Standard Clan class Pacifics 72000/01/02/03/04 built only eleven years earlier in December 1951 and January 1952. Apart from one BR Standard 4MT withdrawn in August 1962 and the unique Duke of Gloucester 8P Pacific last month, the Clan class withdrawals were the first real attack on the BR Standard fleet and really signified that the end of steam on British Railways was fast approaching. At least three of those locomotives withdrawn escaped the cutter’s torch and still exist today
