2807 sat under restoration for several years in the spot in Toddington Yard now occupied by 3850. GWR 28xxs and 2884s were a common sight on the Honeybourne Line and 2807 was a frequent visitor when shedded at Tyseley, Worcester and Stratford upon Avon sheds.

Attached photo taken the evening before the 2807 Supporters' Day on 9 July. It was a very warm weekend! 2807
had mudhole door steam leaks but these were fixed and the loco signed off in time to perform for her supporters on the day. The 2nd image shows 2807 and 4270 together, the former replacing the latter on the roster on 9th July. We really need to paint a shedcode above the pony truck on 2807. And all three are different:-

2807 - Churchward loco rebuilt with outside steam pipes.
2874 - Churchward loco still in original condition with inside steam pipes
3850 - Collett 2884 series with outside steam pipes and cab with side window.

Am I right in thinking that there are also three at Llangollen at the moment? (2859, 3802 and 3814)

I think only 3814's tender is at Llangollen, the loco is still at Grosmont.

You don't actually. GWR shed codes only started to be applied to the platform angles (or hanging bars) some time during WW2. 2807's tender is carrying pre 1934 lettering and as such the locomotives number and shed code would only have been stencilled in white paint inside the cab roof above the drivers seat on the right hand side at that time. This practice continued into BR days on a random basis, using the BR shed codes, in particular 4953 still carried it when retrieved from Barry.
    Regards Bob

Many thanks for that, I was not aware that the application of the shed code was a very late addition to GWR livery.

2807 received its current outside steam pipes in 1937 (according to the photographic and other evidence we have) so it should really only carry the GWR shirtbutton badge, as this is the earliest GWR livery it could carry to be totally authentic (and Dean tapered buffers of course) but we'll not dwell on that!

Although it visited the GWSR for the 1992 season I don't think 2857 has ever been a GWSR/LR resident ;):)

Two standard lengths of connecting rod, and different wheel spacing required for weight distribution.
Here are the two rolling chassis, plus the one for the 4700. 4700 at the top, 4200 in the middle, 2800 on the bottom.

Because they are completely different locomotives - the 42XX shares the same boiler/firebox as a Large Prairie while the 28XX is the same as a Hall.

It always seemed to be a long way off but, as planned, 2807 has now been withdrawn from GWSR service for its HGO - heavy general overhaul. The loco ran its last service on 1 Jan (see GWSR loco dept blog: http://gwsrsteamloco.blogspot.com/2020/01/come-in-number-2807-your-time-is-up.html ) and was soon being prepared for inspection and removal of various fittings carried out by working parties on the following 3 days. Progress so far has been excellent with plans to lift the smokebox off later next week! The boiler will be leaving Toddington for overhaul elsewhere in due course. It took 29 years to restore 2807 from a Barry scrapyard wreck and the team is working hard to ensure that the loco's 1st HGO doesn't take anything like as long! This leaves the GWSR without any 28xxs in working order for the moment, but 2-8-0T 4270 will continue in service. Hopefully, it won't be long before the 2-8-0 tender loco will be represented on the Railway once more, with 3850 progressing with its HGO and 2874 being restored from scrapyard condition.

See ‘Great Western Way’ from HMRS. ISBN 978-0-902835-27-6 and pages 51, 52.

Not sure if it is still in print. The edition I have is dated 2009.

3 really great illustrations you have made Jimc! :). Are they made to scale? (for modellers for example)

"To scale" is a more difficult concept than you might think. Those are taken from the illustrations I did for my GWR book (see sig for details). The master files for those illustrations are vector drawings that I make to a nominal scale of 1mm to the inch. But are they scale drawings? I would have to say no. Some of them are traced from scans of GWR General arrangement drawings, using guidelines based on the principal dimensions, and have, I hope, most components correctly placed and within a scale inch or less. A few of the individual components - I have a library of standard parts - are also traced from GWR drawings and are hopefully good to well under an inch...

Others though are worked up from weight diagrams, and the weight diagrams, whilst nicely drawn, aren't always as accurate as one might hope (there was no need for them to be) and in a few cases even show combinations of features that are not known to have ever existed. Weight diagrams are also very limited - while having the main outlines they don't show much detail, no brake gear for instance. You'll notice a strange lack of balance weights on two of those sketches for example. In some cases I didn't even have weight diagrams for locomotives I badly wanted to include, so had to guesstimate from photographs.

A far more talented draughtsman than I, J. N. Maskelyne wrote ‘If a model or drawing is to be made, be careful to have at hand a photograph showing the particular engine concerned, and of the period in time desired, as every engine seemed to differ in some way ... watch out for the small details. Boiler fittings are always suspect, chimneys in particular, so always try and make the fittings please the eye and look like the photograph ... Also use the drawings with caution ... a drawn line does not prove authenticity.’
And when it came to the actual book the demands of the publisher's layout people meant that drawings were printed to fit to the page rather than 4mm to the foot or whatever. Anticpating that I used three standard sized frames for the drawings, so all the 0-6-0 tanks are to the same scale, but I wouldn't want to place too many bets as to what that scale actually is.

Sorry for the long digression folks, hope its not too tedious.
