Really disappointed about that, I would have been at a loss to know which to go to see, so many fascinating places to visit.
Hope it was a successful weekend and they run it again, next time with a bit more publicity perhaps.

Unusual shunt move from Pickering station to Newbridge last night following the Behind the scenes event.

Repton's boiler appears to have passed its steam test and is receiving cladding etc ahead of being installed in the frames. Not long now (and not a moment too soon!). NELPG's J27 is probably not too far behind (its boiler has just been fitted) but does not have the benefit of all the full time staff working on it - but I'm sure it will be welcomed when it does arrive!

Do I gather there is a motive power shortage at present?

There are only 4 steam locomotives in ticket. 44806 80136 76079 61264. Only 2 of which are passed for running to whitby, so its a rather testing situation. 926 boiler passed the out of frames test last week and this will be a whitby locomotive so there is focus to get it done ASAP. The q6 is having new tyres and boiler work but I don't know of an estimated return date. 5428 is due to be back at some point in the year but the frames were not wheeled as of last week. I only got this from the mpd Facebook site which is really good/educational and moors publications

Although it looks as though the NYMR will have to get through he summer with just five steam locos, Grosmont shed are pulling out all the stops. 5428 is being prepared for re-wheeling and they should be fitted very soon. The flue tube holes are being tapped too, so it looks as though re-tubing is imminent, but this engine is not expected back in traffic till the autumn although it will still have been a fast overhaul.

Information from NELPG news No. 299 loco possibly running later in year depending upon availability of volunteer/contract labour.

According to unofficial NYMR forum unlikely but Mr I.Riley is the person who can confirm his loco's movements.

Thanks, thought I saw it reported somewhere it was Moors bound after its overhaul then off to Scotland to supplement / swap with one of the other two. Sounds like it would be useful to NYMR.

Certainly be a "useful running in turn." Making limited runs onto the mainline i.e. 12 mile round trips [6 miles to/from Whitby] with some repair facilities if needed at Grosmont.

Does the Moos offer Priv rates with an ATOC card? Also could I still use this on the up coming 60s festival weekend?

I think it has fallen through for the Moors - apparently going elsewhere instead.

I think they do accept ATOC priv but do not know if they are available for events.

    Great News!
£4.6M grant offer from Heritage Lottery Fund
is its biggest-ever award to heritage railway operations!

The NYMR is a fantastically successful charity - our trains delight 350,000 passengers each year and more than 1000 committed volunteers determinedly make it all happen.

But it's short of one thing - Investment Capital. We already invest around £1 million annually but we need to spend more on our 180-year old railway, its inadequate workshops and its 50-100 year old vehicles. To remain viable we must also increase our attractiveness to both visitors and volunteers – and there is only so much that the fare box can generate!

The NYMR's plan Steaming On identifies many of our priorities for long term sustainability. Funding them is a challenge but this month we can report a huge step forward.

After two years shaping a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are delighted to announce that we have received Stage 1 approval for a grant of £4.6M towards a £9.2M investment programme aimed at helping underpin the NYMR's future and its resilience.

    What will £9.2M fund?

Steadily helping the NYMR become more sustainable for the future, the project programme will:

    • Renew and repair the worn-out iron bridges around Goathland, removing a threat to the NYMR's continued operation (£2.67M)
    • Provide a fuss free access carriage in every train, with ramps, loos and seating so we can easily accommodate the needs of all our passengers, whatever their mobility (£770k)
    • Construct a covered stable for up to 40 carriages at Pickering, reducing decay and easing maintenance of our irreplaceable carriage fleet (£4.16M)
    • Better serve school groups and families with a dedicated education carriage at Goathland, building on success at Pickering and providing interpretation so visitors get more from their visit to a perfect country station (£330k)
    • Create a new volunteer hostel at Grosmont, providing decent facilities to encourage new volunteers including families and young people (£450k)
    • Develop initiatives to recruit new generations of volunteers to the line (£170k)
    • Build a railway apprenticeship programme (£470k)
    • Place a new emphasis on the care and management of our 18 miles of lineside (£170k).

    (The individual figures are approximate.)

The HLF award depends on two things:

1, We must gain HLF Stage 2 approval. We have a year to flesh out our investment plans before a final grant award can be confirmed. We hope for final approval at the end of 2018.

2, We must raise matching funds of £4.6M. Generous member bequests give us a head start and we hope to secure other grants. But to deliver the investment programme we will need to raise around £2.5M from members, passengers and the public over the next five years.

    How can you help?

Successfully unlocking HLF's funding and delivering a railway set to delight the public for another fifty years will need your help. We are therefore launching the NYMR's Fiftieth Anniversary Appeal with the autumn Moors Line. Every contribution will be doubled by the HLF (and you'll be able to claim Gift Aid too).

Nice to see that where the SVR lead others are following! Joking aside this good news I'd like to think after what's happened to the SVR and GWR more railways will recognise the need to take care of their infrastructure, no point in ignoring the landscape those two pieces of steel run on!
