Yes, it's always seemed odd to me, but it happens. Not just with Bulleid's, but with other 3 cylinder loco's I've driven A1, A3 and A4's.
But generally you can get them moving by a quick notch into reverse and back to forward gear.
However yesterday she made me work to get her moving!

Thank you. Interesting that you like the second one as I nearly didn't process it, it arrived when we had a bit of thick cloud cover and flat light and needed a bit of livening up in Photoshop. Needless to say as soon as I drove off I had to reach for the sunglasses and then sat outside at the pub in Gillingham for the next hour getting sunburnt!

Back in steam days I often saw the driver leaning out of the cab as they came to a stop at places like Salisbury and Basingstoke. Was that to try and stop with th rods in the right place for maximum TE on starting?

I got off at Salisbury and caught a service train back to Eastleigh, arriving just before the train.
So waited to see here go through.
Then drove home, Rowlands castle, and watched her go through my home station.
At the end of the video clip I can be seen walking round from the footbridge.
Every now and then it's nice to watch them rather than be in the cab.

Thanks for sharing. I can't believe what a jungle Stowell has become! I went there in 2005 to see Duke of Gloucester and chose my spot based on a photo in an Ivo Peters book taken from the bridge on which you are standing. I managed a tolerable photo, but the vegetation has become far worse in the subsequent 12 years since my visit.

You've still got a few more chances behind Clan Line, including some trips which aren't Pullman jobs. Here's the diary for 35028 (not updated and still showing last week's trains) 34046 is doing three trains for Steam Dreams and at least one for RTC. Alternatively, if you're prepared to go up North, I think there's a good chance 35018 will turn up at the head of something before too long, although nothing official as yet.

    I hope this helps.

You're correct with Rob and Tom, but it was Graham ward on the shovel.

Ah of course! For some reason I mistook him for Bob Hart (the flat cap I think). Must get my eyes tested! Thanks again for some great work yesterday Wayne!

Gather you had a couple of Clarke's with you on the way down (Jim said he let Dad have a go on the shovel!) - good to see "retired" Don is now a T.I. - thanks again for some terrific runs - are you out again this week?

My footage from Winchfield, Tisbury and Milborne Port. I suggest turning up the sound for the last one! ;)

Nice. I believe we conversed at Winchfield. I was one of the 34081 contingent who'd nipped away from the MHR to see '28.

Can someone advise what the very last steam train to run before the final curtain came down. I know it was 35030 on the up Weymouth to Waterloo but I have a feeling that a 76xxx ran the final duty. If someone can confirm that, I would be grateful

Apologies for analysing this on this thread, but now I've had a chance to get off the mobile phone and delve into the NP archive, I suspect Big Al's suspicions back in February have now come to pass, and someone has had another look at it:

One might be able to do Waterloo to Exeter via Twickenham in 5.5 hours based upon Saturday's trip to Yeovil Junction. But routing it via Kenny-O and Bramley is essentially adding another hour on top of that, so 6.5 hours. Also, experience tells me that WCRC don't get any favours when it comes to pathing; the ability to negotiate with industry contacts gives 35028 an edge at pinch points. My guess would also be that the return would be around 5.5 hours at the very best, so a 12 hour day before we even factor in the layover at Exeter. There's also the possibility that 34046 being used the previous week on the Bognor trip might have been a factor. Regardless, in the warm glow of the summer light, I have been beginning to think that this would have been a trip too far financially (getting to London twice in one week, overnight expenses, etc.), so its cancellation has done me a bit of a favour.

Great photos. 35003 reached 106 at milepost 38 between Winchfield and Fleet 3 miles further on

Just been doing a bit of research on this - I turned to "Southern Steam Sunset" by John H Bird, a most authoritative guide to the final years of Southern Steam. There all is revealed - it was actually a 77xxx than did the honours on the final duty. Rare on the Southern I know, but there is a photo of it at Poole on a van train.

The caption reads "The final revenue earning steam train on the Southern Region at 21.25 on Sunday 9th July 1967. Standard 3 2-6-0 number 77014, the most recently arrived locomotive on the SR has the honour as it leaves Poole on a van train from Bournemouth to Weymouth"

So that's what the book says. Don't ask me for any first-hand confirmation as I was only 3 at the time and living in GWR territory!

Yes I think it was, I often used to leave work in London and travel down to Basingstoke on the first available steam hauled train to catch the 18.35 back usually on a Monday or Wednesday

Thanks for the correction I thought it was approaching Winchfield that things got very exciting on the train, it could be where it broke through the magic ton barrier, my excuse is it was 50years ago!

Thanks very much. I thought it was a standard locomotive and so it was, albeit 77xxx class in 77014. Just briefly, having filmed 35028 on Sunday at Weybridge, I ran my own 00 gauge version on my model railway where each circuit of my double garage represents 3 miles! 35030 Elder Dempster Lines worked an Exeter Central to Waterloo train and in the darkness of the evening, I ran 76069 on a parcels train from Salisbury to Exeter. This was the closest replication that I could do to what happened on 9/7/17. Why not run 35030 Weymouth to Waterloo? Because she was on 72A Exmouth Junction MPD on Sunday. There is a formula that I used which would take yonks to explain and so I will not attempt to here.

Just for the record, I do have a range of 00 gauge SR Bullied locomotives which work on the Bournemouth and Exeter lines in my own little world!!!

    35012 United States Lines
    35026 Lamport and Holt Lines
    35027 Port Line
    35030 Elder Dempster Lines

Here I am on the last day on a platform somewhere far away and 35030 on the depot!

I took the question to mean the top dead centre problem - in which case that was what I assumed happened leaving Waterloo on Wednesday as after moving a couple of feet we stopped and were motionless for 3-4 minutes until she set back and then got hold of them
I believe I read that there has been some slight tinkering with the valve settings so that they line up with the Swindon test plant recommendations when hot - speculating that may have exacerbated the tendency to stall but boy once she's going they seem spot on!
