    I'm sure you're exactly right when looking at what BR management, especially running side management considered normal and acceptable. I'm a bit less convinced that less hands on executives and even more the customers were so tolerant. The difference between the executive who's travelled by steam train and the executive who's travelled to the ofice by Southern electric must have been apparent. Wasn't cleanliness a key value in Southern elecric advertising right back to even before the grouping?

    Suppose its all part of what seems to me a desperately misplaced complacency on the part of rail management of 30s and early 50s, soon to be replaced by an even more dreadful resignation to what they saw as an inevitable fate...

    One thing for sure is that WW2 turned the USA into a power house while it drove the UK to its knees.

    Well yes, that's because UK industry turned entirely to war production and all the UK export markets turned to US production.
