60103 looking good in the sunshine at around 0745 this morning just north of York near Poppleton. It was 3rd in the cavalcade with an HST set first and then a class 91 set following that. The 4th set was the Azuma. A cold, but sunny St George's Day off to a good start!

    What a wasted opportunity !!!

200 + observers stood at Overton bridge to watch the display then the Azuma headed south on its own followed by the 3 remaining trainsets some distance behind ! The NRM advertised a sighting of 4 trainsets in flight at the same time but that was not what was provided. In one way it was a good job that the performance was free otherwise many would have demanded their money back ! ECML-01.jpg ECML-02.jpg

Awesome photos! Thanks for posting. I must admit I was surprised at my location to find that the 4 trainsets passed individually but it made photography of each individual set much easier of course.

At least from my location I could see the Deltic D9002 KOYLI at the back as the FS trainset steamed past! 20170423-8-Cavalcade 3-rear Deltic 9002 KOYLI.JPG

Off topic I know, but am I alone in dreading the introduction of the new Azuma for the addition of engine noise in to every carriage. I love the HST for how quiet it is in those MK3's. I hope and pray its no where near as bad as the bloody scotrail turbostars!

Why not ? It promised a "rare event" then failed to deliver ! Read the NRM's own Press Release !

A world first will take place in Yorkshire next month to celebrate the heritage and future of one of the country’s most iconic railway lines.

Four trains spanning four generations will travel side by side, in the same direction, along the East Coast Main Line on April 23 2017.

Yorkshire’s DNA of speed and style through the ages binds together an event that fittingly comes just days before the now legendary ‘Tour de Yorkshire’ begins.

This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the world famous Flying Scotsman travel alongside two trains from Virgin Trains’ revitalised fleet - an HST (Class 43), an intercity225 (Class 91) - and the rail operator’s brand new train, the Virgin Azuma (Class 800) which is being built by Hitachi in the North East, and will come into service in 2018.

The four trains will travel together for several miles north of York to showcase the past, present and future of rail travel.

The historic journey, organised by Virgin Trains, Welcome to Yorkshire, Network Rail and the National Railway Museum, will begin near the village of Tollerton. The public will get the chance to witness something never seen before on the East Coast Main Line, but those hoping to catch a glimpse are being urged to stay safe behind boundary fencesand keep off the tracks and private land - trespassers will cause the trains to stop and put at risk the completion of both this event and any future plans to showcase the route and its iconic locos.

More details of the event will be released in April.

Rob McIntosh, Managing Director for Network Rail on the London North Eastern and East Midlands route, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to create such a prestigious and unique event for the people of Yorkshire. The area has a very proud rail heritage and by working closely with our industry partners we’ve been able to turn what has been a logistically challenging vision – to create an iconic railway moment on the East Coast Main Line without impacting on regular passengers - into what will be a truly special occasion.”

David Horne, Managing Director for Virgin Trains on the east coast, said: “Just one year on from unveiling our brand new Virgin Azuma trains, we’re delighted to present this unique event that showcases the past, present and future of rail travel in the UK, with Azuma travelling alongside 'Flying Scotsman' and trains from our current fleet. With our new Azuma trains entering service next year, this is an opportunity to celebrate the icons of the railways and look forward to 2018 when we’ll usher in a new era for travel on the East Coast route."

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said:“This is a major event for Yorkshire and something people will remember for decades. It once again shows how the county is leading the way and to top it off, it’s the weekend before the Tour de Yorkshire so will get the build up to the race off to a flying start!”

Paul Kirkman, director for the National Railway Museum in York which owns Flying Scotsman, said: “The East Coast Main Line has long been famed for speed and style. In the 19th century elegant locomotives were designed to haul trains on this route cementing its reputation as a railway racing stretch operated by thoroughbred engines. The four train line up epitomises the evolution of the later generation of fast, elegant and stylish trains - all with a shared bloodline - that epitomise the history of the route from the 1850s to today.

“The National Railway Museum is proud that Flying Scotsman, a symbol of engineering excellence, the first steam locomotive to achieve an authenticated speed of 100mph and the first to undertake a non-stop run between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley, is taking its place alongside such worthy successors to its speed and style mantle.”

Karen Boswell, managing director for Hitachi Rail Europe, said: “We believe our new British built Azuma trains will inspire the next generation of rail enthusiasts and show how investment in new trains will transform passenger experiences on this iconic route.”

    Notes to editors

    • The Four Trains event will take place on Sunday 23 April - confirmation of timings to follow
    • The event will see the four trains positioned on the four tracks of the East Coast Main Line at Tollerton junction in North Yorkshire, around six miles north of York station
    • The four trains will together move south, towards York station, in a staggered formation at around 20-25mph before then returning to York station
    • No passengers or media will be allowed on the trains
    • Specific, designated media viewing locations are available with details to be confirmed closer to the event
    • Not forgetting the diesel heritage of the area – Flying Scotsman will be hauled into its place in the historic line up by a Class 55 Deltic
    • Stagecoach and Virgin are working in partnership to operate the East Coast and West Coast inter-city routes under the Virgin Trains brand. Together, they are on track to revolutionise rail travel across the UK.
As one of the 200+ lineside observers who waited patiently at Overton noting the 4 train lineup in the distance then saw the Class 800 trainset pass on its own before the other 3 trainsets pass as expected but NOT as promised (i.e. in a flight of 4 trainsets !) I can assure you that any expected public goodwill dissipated as quickly as Theresa May's commitment to "no snap election !".

The NRM may wonder why it does not have the public credit and support that it merits; today has provided the answer. If you renege on a promise you destroy the public trust in both you and your organisation !

Oh do shut up and just be grateful you saw all four trains, even if one was a bit too far ahead for your liking. Lots of people would loved to have seen what you saw but couldn't be there. Some people just don't realise just how lucky they are.

So if you were advised that a heritage line would be operating a double-headed BB / WC combination over a weekend and you made special efforts (including upsetting domestic arrangements) to see it only to find that the train was operated as a top 'n tail working you would be happy knowing that you saw both locos ? I don't think so !!

Fred, I think you may have been in the wrong place old pal, from the pics and vids I've seen there was a staggered line up. I suggest a look at Jack Boskett's website or Instagram page you might do well to calm down and retract what you've said.

Being a foreigner I know I have no place in this thread, but........the Deltic at the back of the pack just isnt right. It was a milestone locomotive and should be alongside FS as it was (to my understanding) the next step in British high speed rail. History is being ingored.

The thing is, this was Virgin's 'show', spotlighting their new trains, and Deltics weren't/aren't part of Virgin's ECML 'history'. FS was there to attract punters, yes, but remember that Branson was involved in getting her into the National Collection - there was a real danger that she might have been sold abroad when the Marchington project collapsed, and everything, including FS, was for sale, in order to clear debts.

At least 9002/55002 was present. Logically, rather than her, a standard ECML "Thunderbird" Class 67 would have been more 'appropriate' for the job.

Company lays on massive PR event that by co-incidence has attraction to enthusiasts. Enthusiasts go ape when precise logistics of event are designed with PR requirements prioritised.

In other news a young mother was struck today on the arm by a small missile, believed to be a toy, thrown from a nearby pram. The mother was reported unharmed. Asked for a comment, the occupant of the pram said "waah waah waah".

Fred - I can see nothing misleading in the NRM press release. The trains did travel south from Tollerton in staggered formation for a while. They then regrouped and ran in line abreast for some distance. Then after standing in staggered formation outside The Sidings at Benningborough where there was a large crowd to view them (see The Telegraph photo above) they proceeded to Skelton Bridge Junction with the Azuma in the lead. Remember that this was a publicity exercise arranged by Virgin Trains to promote their new Azumas and was not under the control of the NRM. Presumably you saw the Azuma parading along "with history in its wake", but all four trains were clearly visible, as promised, if not in the formation you would have wanted. On arrival at York, where spectators were advised to gather all four trains lined up at the south end of the station with the Deltic parked alongside 60103.

I'm sorry you did not get the photos you wanted but the publicity people certainly did certainly and it was clearly a very well organised exercise. At least you saw a memorable and historic event.
