    Locomotive building was being undertaken as follows, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry were delivering the final batch of Class 20’s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough and British Rail Crewe Works were delivering Class 47’s and British Rail, Derby Works were delivering Class 25’s

    New locomotives:
    Class 20 – D8186/87/88/89/90
    Class 25 – D7667/68/70
    Class 47 – D1108/09/10, D1957
    Class 73 – E6048/49

    Main line diesel and electric production in the month remained steady at fourteen. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased significantly from two hundred and six to ninety four. With less than two years to go inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes with the Austerity 2-8-0’s (twenty five locomotives) and BR Standards (twenty two locomotives including another five Britannia Pacific’s) being particularly heavy.

    Class 20 – D8185/91/92/93/94/95/96/97
    Class 25 – D7671/72
    Class 47 – D1111, D1958/59

    Doncaster Works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

    D5523/48, D5612/60/98, D5806/29

    Main line diesel and electric production in the month remained steady at thirteen. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased significantly from ninety four to fifty six. With less than two years to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals, with in February eleven Black Fives, eleven 8F’s and thirteen BR Standards being condemned. This month would see the slaughter commence in earnest of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet with thirty two locomotives withdrawn. British Rail had finally decided to react to the effects of the Beeching cuts to the network and the move towards “block” freight trains on its shunting engine requirements.

    Main line diesel and electric production in the month dropped to only three with no deliveries this month of class 20’s or 47’s. Steam withdrawals in the month increased significantly from fifty six to eighty. With less than two years to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In March fifteen Black Fives, twenty four 8F’s and twelve BR Standards were condemned. This month would see the slaughter continue of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet with thirty eight locomotives withdrawn.

    Locomotive building was being undertaken as follows, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry were delivering the final batch of Class 20’s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough were delivering Class 47’s and British Rail, Derby Works were delivering Class 25’s

    New locomotives:

    Class 20 – D8198/99, D8300/01/02/03/04/05/06

    D5520, D5603/35/99, D5808/10/19/20/22

    Main line diesel and electric production in the month increased to twelve, however it also included the last of the Class 25 fleet. Steam withdrawals in the month increased significantly from eighty to one hundred and five. With only eighteen months to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In April fourteen Black Fives, twenty two 8F’s and twenty three BR Standards were condemned including four Britannia’s. However the slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet had a temporary pause with only four locomotives condemned.

    First generation locomotive building was virtually complete with a couple of Class 47’s from the Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough still to be delivered and the last twenty or so Class 20’s from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry. On order yet to commence delivery were the fifty Class 50 locomotives.

    New locomotives:

    Class 20 – D8307/08/09/10/11/12/13/14/15/16

    Doncaster Works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

    D5555/66, D5617/18/90, D5824/27

    Main line diesel and electric production in the month decreased to ten. Steam withdrawals in the month increased significantly from one hundred and five to one hundred and fifty nine. With only sixteen months to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In May twenty six Black Fives, thirteen 8F’s and forty four BR Standards were condemned including four Britannia’s. However the slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet was still stalled with only seven locomotives condemned.

    Probably for the first time in the 20th century no new locomotives entered traffic this month. With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete, with only a couple of Class 47’s from the Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough, the last ten or so Class 20’s from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry and the on order, fifty Class 50 locomotives still to be delivered lean times were approaching for the UK locomotive manufacturing industry.

    The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

    D5524/61, D5812/14/17/23/28/43

    Steam withdrawals in the month decreased from one hundred and fifty nine to one hundred and thirty seven. With only fifteen months to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In June twenty two Black Fives, thirteen 8F’s and thirteen BR Standards were condemned, however the major condemnations in the month was forty one Austerity 2-8-0’s. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet was still relatively quiet with fourteen locomotives condemned.

    For the second consecutive month no new locomotives entered traffic. Steam withdrawals in the month increased from one hundred and thirty seven to one hundred and sixty two. This month saw the end of steam on the Southern Region with withdrawal of the remaining steam fleet. With only fourteen months to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In June sixteen Black Fives, seventeen 8F’s and and no less than sixty one BR Standards were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet started to pick up with twenty one locomotives condemned.

The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet gained further momentum with thirty five locomotives condemned.

    For the fourth consecutive month no new locomotives entered traffic. With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete, with only a couple of Class 47’s from the Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough, the last ten or so Class 20’s from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry and the on order, fifty Class 50 locomotives still to be delivered lean times were here for the UK locomotive manufacturing industry.

The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with sixteen locomotives condemned. At least two of the steam withdrawals survived breaking up and entered preservation.

    After four consecutive months of no new locomotives entering traffic the final batches of locomotives started to be delivered. This month would see the final batch of Class 20’s and the first Class 50 delivered from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry

    New Locomotives
    Class 20 – D8323
    Class 50 – D400

    The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

    D5551/98, D5607/28/66, D5830/31/37/54

    Steam withdrawals in the month decreased from one hundred and sixty seven to one hundred and nineteen. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In August fifty Black Fives, twenty 8F’s and twenty two BR Standards were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with twenty locomotives condemned. Also condemned were two accident victims Class 40 D322 and English Electric prototype DP2. At least three of the steam withdrawals survived breaking up and entered preservation.

    With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see three further locomotives from the final batch of Class 20’s and one of the remaining couple of Class 47’s delivered.

    New Locomotives
    Class 20 – D8317/18/20
    Class 47 – D1960

    The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

    Steam withdrawals in the month decreased slightly from one hundred and nineteen to one hundred and sixteen. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In August thirty six Black Fives, twenty eight 8F’s and forty two BR Standards (including thirty three 9F 2-10-0’s) were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with sixteen locomotives condemned. At least three of the steam withdrawals survived breaking up and entered preservation.

    Steam withdrawals in the month decreased from one hundred and sixteen to eighty two. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form the majority the monthly withdrawals. In the month twenty five Black Fives, seventeen 8F’s and thirty one BR Standards (including thirteen Britannia Pacific 4-6-2’s) were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with thirty eight locomotives condemned. A start was made on the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleet this month with the withdrawal of all five North British Warships (D600), six Metro-Vic Co-Bo’s (Class 28), two Swindon Type 1’s (Class 14), and a North British Type 2 (Class 22). The rebuilding of the North British Type 2 (Class 21) with a new Paxman 12YJXL engine was curtailed and thirty of the remaining un-rebuilt engines condemned. Finally a fire damaged Class 24 was also withdrawn. At least two of the steam withdrawals survived breaking up and entered preservation.
