a photo would be good so we can get an idea of what a rake of them might look like, if anyone can oblige

    Hello to all,

As we know Tarmac wish to dispose of the ICI hopper wagons shortly, the exact timescale for this is not known. Would it be feasible to set up a charitable trust with the aim of preserving the six wagons at Tunstead and arranging to give them a home on one of the nearby heritage railways e.g. PR, ELR, CR, EVR? That way the wagons could be saved and restored to running and made available for events. Cosmetically the wagons would not need much attention but the running gear, brakes and couplings would need to be checked and maintained as necessary. The only items that would need to be made are some replica cast I C I letters to the appropriate sizes (small and large depending on when built).

As a charitable trust perhaps the other wagons in preservation could be brought under the same collective restoration aims and objectives to bring them upto the same standard. As the 8F guys freely admit, the overhaul of their two hoppers is understandably not the top priority right now. So loan them/gift them or however is best appropriate to the trust and let them take over that responsibility on their behalf.

I am sure once the Metro-Vick Co-Bo at Bury is up and running, the chaps there would love to see it haul the hoppers again just like it did back in '63.

    Regards
    Paul

The big questions really are .. how much to buy, how much to move and could they sit where they are until a home is found.
but realty bites... if someone buys them.. will they ever get restored.

I can't physically help with any restoration but i'm more than happy to act in an administrative capacity .

personally I think these wagons deserve preservation , The range of motive power and the Era's they ran in must make them appealing

As others ahve said an East Midlands Location Butterley , Rowsley , Wirksworth would be perfect

Cauldon Lowe with an S160 or 48173?

Love to help myself, just at the moment I'm not in a position to do so with other commitments. I'd love to see something along the lines of pharrc20 proposal.

I am also more than willing to help administer saving these fantastic wagons and be actively involved in their restoration, altho sadly i am in no financial position to help fund them sadly!

I hope we can save them!

I am sorry to report that the six PHV/JGV hoppers stored at Tunstead sidings since 1997 have now been scrapped. These were BLI 19021 / 039 / 043 / 065 / 072 / 19146 and they were scrapped on site in mid October over a period of four days. They have been the subject of a preservation attempt in the last year or so but alas not to be.

Back in the early 1990s I was in conversation with the late Brian Oliver (saviour of Leander and later Galatea) and mentioned what a fine sight some ICI hoppers would be behind 8F 48624 at Peak Rail with which he was also involved. I thought nothing of it then got another call from him a couple of hours later saying he had contacted the quarry and they had agreed to save six - that's the kind of chap he was! They languished for many years and could even be seen on Google Earth but I think they were eventually cut up.

The plan would see the survivors together, operating with a medium to long term strategy to secure their future as a unique rake .

So from a quick browse of the VCT site the survivors are:
    3200/19000 (1936) - Midland Railway Centre
    19036 (1938) - Midland Railway Centre
    19052 (1938) - Severn Valley
    19129 (1952) - Severn Valley
    19154 (1953) - NRM Shildon
    19161 (1953) - Long Marston Airfield

Is that all of them? And whose is the one at Long Marston?

I believe that's all of them now. The six at Tunstead would have created a rake of 12 potentially (if the preserved 6 were brought together for the "greater good") which would certainly have given the Windcutter set a run for its money!

There was much talk of saving the Tunstead ones but alas, only talk. Fag packet calculations at the time coupled to the relatively high price of scrap steel suggested that this classic WIBN plan would have cost a fortune! A shame but there you go, we're very lucky to have what we've got.

Andrew Goodman still owns ICIM 19161 that is in private storage at Long Marston Airfield and it is still there according to a recent photo that was posted on social media last week. As for the 6 that used to be at Tunstead the whole business of cutting up the wagons was taken by then management having seemingly just decided to get rid of the wagons rather than entertain selling them on for preservation. The Mountsorrel Branch on the GCR was mooted as a possible place for the wagons to go but the talks came to nothing. And the next thing the wagons had been scrapped and my contacts at Tunstead didn't even know until they saw the last of the lorries taking away the scrap.

Having been involved with the National Wagon Preservation Groups efforts to preserve members of the MGR coal hopper wagons and the unique prototype CDA china clay wagon I am all for gathering the remaining ICI hoppers together and running them together.

I suppose if you can build new steam engines from nothing then building replica wagons ouught to be a hell of a lot cheaper in theory!
    Cheers Paul

A complication, though not insurmountable, would be those owned by charities and whether the proposed operation met the charitable objectives (the SVR pair are owned by the 8F charity)
