The southbound trains that were on RTT were timed at 45 mph.

I understand from a friend in the know - he's rarely wrong - that Tornado will be working at the head of the trains in both directions, chimney first from Skipton and tender first from Appleby. The 67 should be unmanned and will be used solely for electrical power and ETH for the Air Con Mk2s.

Don't we just go around in circles on here at times? I said that way back in #12 but I'm glad that it's been reconfirmed! :)

I think 67s can be unmanned in this sort of situation. I think one of the requirements to allow this is for the loco to be fitting with automatic fire fighting equipment.

Only when being driven from another vehicle eg DVT. As it'll be idling, it will have to be manned. Driver can sit there with his feet up the whole time though.

Doesn't post #106 confirm that the southbound runs are pathed at 45mph confirming tender first running?

Edit - someone beat me to this.

Looking at another post above if its going to be Mk2 air cons the noise of the 67 won't make a huge difference as you won't really be able to hear the loco working anyway from inside the stock.

Any ideas where the stock is coming from, is it likely to be a uniform rake or a rag tag of liveries?

I wonder whether it may be a DRS rake as DRS are already providing stock to northern for the Cumbrian Coast job with the 37's, at least its in a uniform and comparatively neutral livery, but would DRS operate another rolling stock - my fear is it may end up being the set which is sometimes around which is a mix of ex Virgin and ex Anglian stock which is hardly going to be good advert for mainline steam!

from a passenger perspective it probably doesn't matter about livery!!! opening windows however is a different matter... :)

Normally I would agree with you wholeheartedly (I do agree about the problem if sealed mk2's are used), however in terms of the exterior coating my only thought is that this is likely to get some media coverage and also be used for promotional materials etc and thus I can imagine how good it will look as Tornado crosses Batty Moss filmed from a helicopter looking like she is pulling a rake of stock coloured in by a group of toddlers who had a set of pencils and were going to make sure they used them all!

Too many posts to go back through but has anyone found out what the ticket buying process is? No sign yet of Northern Rail selling Plandampf Season Tickets. Can we just buy 6 off-peak returns??

Looks like we are waiting for Northern Rail to catch up. For example on their website you can book tickets Leeds-Appleby on the "normal" 9.56 from Leeds which they say gives an onward connection to the first Tornado train at Skipton. The extra 09.47 from Leeds (1M53), (which is the advertised connection on the publicity info) does not yet exist according to Northern. I suppose all will be clear soon?

I assumed the Tornado trains were removed from the database for 24 hours as it gives rise to this confusion. So I'm surprised the database has them back. The 09:47 isn't an extra, that is the regular train which remains on the Northern (and other) database, but terminating Skipton. In theory there is a connection off the 09:56 into Tornado. In practice remains to be seen! I remain perplexed how all this will be 'managed'!

You are quite right-the 09:47 is the regular train, sorry for my mistake. It just doesn't appear on the Northern booking pages if you try to book through from Leeds to Appleby, but does appear if you want to book Leeds to Skipton! I'm still confused and will now go for a lie down.....

If northern deal with this with their normal efficiency I don't have any great hopes for the operational and administrative success of the trains, for the true northern experience the ticket machines must not work, the heating will either be boiling or non-operational, the toilets will be locked out of use and you won't be able to see out of the window due to dirt and/or condensation....

(just a little exasperated as my last three journeys with them are all presently subject to delay repayment claims whilst one late last year is now subject to regulator investigation!)
