I'd heard the rumours, but all I can say is wow...

    this was interesting as well:

and so another boiler heads back to Germany.

At the time of ordering in 2009... the AUD was weaker than it is now.
    $1.25mn = c612k Euro, or c£696k in 2009.

If Meiningen did the deal in AUD there going to benefit the exchange rate... if negotiated in Euros.. the Aussies are getting an even cheaper boiler than planned !
My guess would be it was done in Aussie dollars.

Having just read the latest developments, I wonder how many people are currently looking back with hindsight at the Mitsubishi deal?

What can you say, those poor people who have put the money and effort into a new boiler, and now even before being steamed it has to return for remedial work. They must be absolutely gutted.

most likily outcome is that uk based restorers will go for a UK built boiler , i would think that after the problems with Tornado and with 3801 Meiningen wont be getting many repeat orders

On the other side of the coin Meiningen have had a lot of invaluable experience and are far more likely to get it right next time...
What is the Largest new build UK boiler so far ?
Have any of the current crop of UK new builds actually placed orders for new build boilers ?

Would you be prepared to take the risk, it should be right first time, some manufacturers may be able to get away with the general public doing the snagging, but if I were going to lay out that sort of money..........

Depends if were talking solely about locomotive boilers.

Does 45428 count ?, isn't there a pannier with a pretty substantial new boiler ?, there's always the bloomers boiler ?

Yes Locomotive Boilers, sorry not aware of 45428.
4472's original A3 boiler hasnt got much A3 left in it, but if i win a couple of million on the Lottery tomight and want, Say - a BR 1 Boiler built, brand New
Who in the UK is confident that they could do that, SVR ?, LNWR Crewe ? Pridhams ?
Or would it have to be Meiningen or Mitsubishi ? to get any change back

It appears to be about 18 months since the 3801 website was updated.
Has anyone been Down Under recently or know how the loco's restoration is coming on?

The new boiler, as widely reported.. didnt fit into the frames of 3801 when delivered.
A Project Manager from a contractor overseeing the work has moved on some while ago.
The new boiler went back to Meiningen, for partial replacement.
The new boiler has been dismantled

It (or another replacement) was due back last year, rumours of issues on the new boiler are circulating and progress has stalled...

One thing puzzled me.. if the objective of replacing the old boiler with a new one failed first time round..I assume there must have been a drawing / specification that Meiningen worked to / created... How come 2nd time round they didnt dispatch with it the old boiler... at least then they have a physical frame of reference to work with if there are translation issues with the former ?

My assumption.. there's disagreement between owner, contractor and supplier as to who pays and that will probably take longer and cost more to resolve than the work on the actual job and following that there's probably the will to finance the repairs and commit a timescale.

it's not just the UK that has overhaul steam messes.. (I'm thinking of a PRR K4 in the US as well).

The silence is deafening, but could equally indicate nothing is happening too.

ADB968008 - Thank you for your response. Let's hope it's not too long before 3801 is running again.
